lent a friend my bike while on holiday

I could never feel like that about someone dropping my bike. Therefore, nobody rides my rides. By the same token, I could never take someone else's ride away from them, even by accident, so I don't ride other people's bikes.

There have been three or four exceptions to that rule in the last three years but each time, I said, "never again." Now, it will be, "never again."

I have a friend who has six bikes, the oldest of which is an '06. The other five are '07s. Some have asked him to borrow a bike for a group ride and he ALWAYS says no.

One time, an equally well-off friend (friend #2)asked him (friend #1) to borrow a bike for a test ride. He said: "If you can write me a check for it right now, then okay." Friend #2 wrote the check and went for his ride...as if he'd purchased the bike then and there.

I'm sorry that your friend dumped your ride. Glad he's okay. Hope you've gained something very important from this experience.

My best to you both...
