I assume by "done right" were talking heat shied (of some sort) installed properly....

GJoker has the high mounts, but in Carbon Fiber. The few times I rode 2 up with him, I had almost no heat on me. Even getting off the bike wasn't a problem.

If not installed right by making sure you have clearence from all pipes, then yes it will melt plastics. Any system will.
Heat shield with help.

I have the brushed aluminum on my '04. I decided to leave the passenger pegs off for the time being...since I rarely (basically never) ride 2-up. Secret to the install is TAKE YOUR TIME and trial fit everthing before locking down all the bolts.

I have the carbon cans, and ride 2 up all the time with no complaints. Then again, who would complain about getting a ride on a Busa!
