Got a votage question

My bike is still under construction, and my buddy loaned me his cbr 600 to ride. Well, it died on me today. I smelled battery acid. I pulled the seat off and the battery was really hot. It would not start. Got a jump start and just made it home. It is a bran new battery. I was thinking it was over charging. so I but my charger on the battery that has an alt. tester and volt meter. at an idle it varies around 11.6 to 12.6 and when I reved it up a litlle around 4,000 in was around 14 but at higher rpms above 6000 it is like 16 volts. So regulator is bad? Shouldn't it stay around 14? I figured one of you guys would know.

yup --16 is too high -- regulator is overcharging and should be replaced
check all the wires (specially the ones to the stator as they tend to melt)
you should see 14-14.5 tops from about 3k on
may have wasted the new battery too (will sulfate and boil off the electrolite)

thanx, I know it should be 14 on a car.... was not sure about bikes but figured the same. With it jumping around so much, I figured it was the regulator rectifier. Battery still under warrenty, going to have buddy take it back then get new regulator. Will check wire too. Knew you guys would have good input.
