Geez. I hate to be a wet blanket or something but I think theres a rather large point being missed. As far as I have read or heard about this particular "crackdown", nobody is being targeted/ticketed/harrassed except for people who need it. Dont want to get stopped? Dont want a ticket? Dont want to see LEOs all weekend? Dont speed. Drive safely. Keep your fellow cyclists in line with you. Stop someone that you see driving recklessly. Do your part to keep the accidents/recklessness/stupidness in line. Do all of that and the LEOs will have NO reason to be there.
Otherwise, IMHO, they SHOULD be there. Its a public road. And thats kinda their JOB.

I received this return email today:

As you have noticed, the THP has started an enforcement program in the
Deals Gaps Area of Hwy. 129. Some people are very upset with this
effort and some people applaud it as long overdue. We are receiving emails
on both sides of the issue. I can tell you in the past year, we
received calls and emails every few days that ask us to do "something" in
this area. The overwhelming majority of people describe this area as
"total chaos and lawlessness." When you combine these types of
descriptions and the statistical information on crashes and fatalities (three
fatalities in one weekend two weeks ago), we felt like we had to do
something as a public safety organization. You may not agree with our
program but it is aimed at protecting the public who frequent that area and
ride in a safe manner. It has nothing to do with "quotas" and driving
tourism from Tennessee.
Anyone who rides in that area and does so safely is always welcome and
will not have any problem with the THP. We will continue to conduct
our enforcement program for the near future in an effort to make Deals
Gap a safe place for recreational motorcycle activity.

There have been several instances of motorcycles being waved over that were trailing three to four cars. The cars weren't pulled over, just the bikes. Several folks are carrying recording devices and recording the conversations from the officers. Though I've not heard these myself, supposedly there have been some interesting statements made by the officers. These are being forwarded to the press.

What aggravates most all of us locals is that, we average three deaths a year up there. That's been the average for the last decade. We average quite a few more on other local hwys from automobile accidents involving cars running over motorcycles. These don't seem to bother the state. They say that safety is their driving reason for being there, but their actions don't reflect that. They'll let safety issues slide but write you up for tag placement.

One of the riders yesterday evening was almost run over by a state trooper coming around a curve across the double yellow. The rider threw his hand up and the trooper wagged his finger at him like it was the riders fault and don't do that again kinda deal.

We'll survive this garbage just like we have before. I ride somewhere else until the bulls___ ends. They're doing the same thing at Shady Valley. I just hope they don't figure out where we've all gone.

I rode through today. By the time I rode through there was only one trooper left at Rocket Corner between the Overlook and Tabcat. I ran second gear to keep the revs to a minimum and never got over 30. It sucked. I don't drag knees but damn they could at least allow you a little something. I just used it to stop and talk to all the locals along the way hanging out.

I think if I was as close as you are to the Dragon I would only ride it on weekdays in the late afternoon and early evening. I would ride some of the other great roads in our area that are much less traveled on weekends.

I normally do. I haven't been since the crackdown. I rode about 300 miles yesterday ending up at the Gap late where hopefully they would be gone. I LOVE 28 from where it closes down to a two lane and Fontana dam turn off. You can really hammer down through there. It is about like the Skyway.
