White is the diagnostic connector.
Connect red/white to black/white to check for codes.
The letter "C" plus a 2 digit number will appear on the dash(dealer mode).
C00 means no codes present.
The Black is also used to connect to for ecu flashing/communication.

yes and this is also how to check TPS setting
at least on a gen 1

If you're careful not to ground it out on anything.
Use a piece of wire instead, with both the bare ends fully in the plugs.
You Can ride the bike this way too.
Not all codes are always present, so riding you can see one pop up.

first, before you loosen any other screws etc. download the manual for your gen2 (the plug at the ecm tells me that) HERE
and questions like the one above is obsolet after reading the manual
and if you have questions again you should mention what gen, 1 or 2 and if 2 with or without abs or 3, you have
Tried it today with a bit of wire and got C-00 on the display which is all good. Also discovered how to disable the shift light so that's now turned off. Thanks for the tips. I'm learning.
