Cleaning the forks

I was just wondering what procedure you all use to clean the forks. I usually just took soap and water to mine which got them clean for the past couple years but I also had a fork with a leak a couple weeks ago that had to have the seal replaced. I am beggining to wonder if repeated exposure to the water caused the seal to wear out quickly. So how do you guys clean urs and keep them lubricated? Thanks in advance for any help.

ummm... nothing...

On aircraft you wipe them down with a clean lint free rag and some hydraulic fluid. The internal wiper should keep most of the gunk out of the workings unless it is super dusty where you are.

Use a micro cloth and some light oil, do not leave any residue on it if you are going to mess with it.

I just stick my dirty forks in the dishwasher.

I find that a little lemon scented Pledge furniture polish on a lint-free rag does the trick everytime. I've been around bikes for quite a while and I've got a little bit of wisdom to share sometime...
