Chain Guard ?????

I was just reading another thread about someone needing a chain guard to pass state inspection which reminded me of my past curiosity as to the manufactures intended purpose of the chain guard. I personally would think that it should actually be a "guard" in the unlikely event that a chain breakage occurs that it prevent the broken chain from ripping your leg or face off

. Now I really dont see that little factory piece of plastic doing anything except preventing a little excess oil fling from happening, I don't really see it as any type of guard whatsoever. Anybody else ever think about this? I am a bit more comfortable with mine which is made of steel.

Maybe to keep clothing or other objects from getting snagged while in motion? That's the best I can come up with.

Chain Guards are to keep things from getting caught up in the chain.

they are required for drag racing tech inspection as well.... open chain and sprocket are an invite to "munching"
