When I worked for BMW we had bicycle frames hung in the parts department, asking price north of $4k. They where heavy as f&$k too. Must have been a $200 Walmart bike with $3800 worth of BMW brand whoring attached.
No it's not crazy, it's handmade c/f in a shape that is the result of years of bicycle racing evolution and technology, just like motorcycles. The pro level bicycle is built by amazing craftsmen just as skilled as F1 engineers. Just as brave men and women race bicycles as do MotoGP riders. Not bragging at all.....but as an example of a typical higher end bicyclist.....My Pinerrello roadbike is worth about $6500 (after my upgrades on an already $3500 bicycle)and on the rides I go on (30-100 miles) my bike is a"typical" level in the group.
I just want to make the point that serious bicycling is a big global sport requiring 1000s of hours of training to be able to keep up with the group and grow in the sport...it's healthy, fun and challenging (try decending a mountain road at 50 mph) and it sure has changed my life. (and made me a better Busa rider too!). No, top level roadbikes are not overpriced, you get what you pay for. Doyle
