Those cars overheat. In fact, a lot of Italian sports cars--even the modern ones--still have overheating issues when they're not moving. If he ran it hard, got the temp up, and then slowed down and wasn't getting tons of air flow through the radiator it's quite possible it would overheat. Now, as for the flaming fireball of a problem. . . That seems doubtful from simply engine heat.
