every Thursday night i go out and play in the shop for "bike night".:beerchug:
i had given my cousin Jon an 850 Maxim Midnight Special.
we rolled it in out of the snow and began tear down to figure out what was wrong with it. it had been sitting sense 98, "ran when parked"

after a month or so soaking in merphy's marvel mystery oil, we decided to crack the head off and check it out.
as i thought, rusted frozen pistons in 2 cylinders and almost all the valves are rusted and froze.
began pricing pistons, rings, valves, valve seals, gaskets, ext.
between parts and machine work it is more $$ than the ol junker is worth.
even if i did all the machine work myself, the parts are crazy expensive.

im going to try and look for alternatives for parts, but i think this one may just be parted out. :dozingoff:

Bummer!

last night we sealed it up and rolled it out of the shop.

oh well, on to the next project! :learn:

How about Weisco pistons and rings? Are they that expensive also? I know factory parts are outrageous but hopefully you can find an alternative, maybe a used motor. Good luck..

Its amazing, the difference between how well bikes stored outside hold up, compared to bikes stored inside. A while back I helped my brother get a GS1000 running that hadn't been started in over 20 years. It had been stored inside a garage its whole life under a cover, and the previous owner had drained the tank and carbs dry before he parked it. We pulled off the valve cover, oiled the cams, dribbled a bit of oil down the spark plug holes, turned the engine over a few times, then put her back together and fired her up. She purred like a kitten, like it had never sat  No issues of any kind. Now if that bike would have been stored outside it would have been scrap. Bikes like to be inside, just like pets

of course all of the parts froze, it's COLD up there

hope you're able to find a recently wrecked one that you can get cheap and make one bike out of the two :beerchug:
