work injury and the busa

I'm a blue collar worker. I work as a tech, but the job requires me to pass a physical and be able to bend over, lift, etc.

The job is not hard, but at times I spend a lot of time on my knees (). In April, my left knee decided to stop working. It didn't lock, but it hurt like hell, and on top of that swelled up into a nice softball shape.

Since this happened at work, I was sent to our clinic and got an X-ray done. According to the doc, no water in the knee, so here is some 600mg anti inflammatory pain killer and was sent on my way.

I skipped the next two days of work, since it hurt like hell and the swelling wasn't getting better. I began physical therapy and was put on "light duty" at work. Long story short, the physical therapy didn't make it better, and eventually I got an MRI. The MRI was inconclusive but it did show the agitated area (muscle) and showed that I did in fact have some water in my knee :(

Started seeing a specialist and ended up in round two for therapy. The therapy again failed to work, and the doc basically is at a loss. We came down to two options - a steroid shot or an exploratory surgery where he sticks a camera and pokes around hoping to find something to fix.

We did the shot and there was some initial improvement but my knee is still weak and feels 60-70%. Other than taking the two days off after the injury, I have been working 5 days a week. Now I can do 80% of my job as is, but I refuse to get down on my left knee, so I am not able to a few things.

Anyways, since I've had two different doctors, and a few rounds of therapy, now works is doing their own independent inquiry - sending me to a different doctor.

My knee doesn't hurt / swell up when I ride or walk (as long as the walking is kept to under an hour or so). I haven't ridden to work since this happened with the fear that they will try to blame it on my riding.

What do you guys think? Should I be staying off the bike?

I would try to stay off the bike until it is settled even though riding may not have anything to do with it.

could be bad if your knee goes out at a stop light....just sayin.

it wasn't that type of injury, and the specialist said it's not like that, I do wear my brace while I'm on the bike, and haven't had a "shaky knee" incident.

I can walk fine, running and biking is ok (under and hour)

my light duty "work" is worse for my knee than me sitting on a bike.
I could say that my "light duty" is actually slowing the healing down.

Then go ride :beerchug:

You don't have to justify anything to me. Only reason I commented that way is because it sounds like we probably work for the same company.

Are you in the military? Because they believe in sending you to physical therapy. In most cases therapy only makes ur injury worst

Unfortunately a lot of people use the system, they are not quite honest and spoil it for those who are. With some type of injuries, where we believe the employee is not honest and the injury could possibly not be work related, or real, we go as far as having off duty pictures taken showing activities much more strenuous than the work environment and we use this as evidence to get dishonest cases dismissed. Personally, when I worked in CA, I found one in three cases to be questionable. Part of my job was to meet a very tough budget, and workers comp could run well past a couple of million, meaning we had to do our best to make sure all cases were true and valid.

It is clear that your issue is real, but it will be best for you to make sure no doubt is placed on your situation. That said, I would suggest that the bike is kept away from work, or any places where people from your company can possibly see you until you are fully recovered. Actually complaining where it can be heard, that you really miss riding your bike, but would rather first recover, would help your case.

Stay off the bike when going to work. It's just to be on the safe side. Have the doc do the look a loo surgery. Sometimes they have to go in to see what is going on in the knee.

I have issues with my knees as well and I have found that if I use some foam pads if I have to get on my knees in the garage or at work make life allot easier to work and get up afterwards. The ones I have at home came from the kids section at walmart hope this might help you as well.

uncle had similar prob. he is a big boat guru tech. on his knees alot. ended up being an infection. use knee pads and or thick towel or blanket. stay off the bike till you get squared away. dont give them an easy out on your case. my2cents

I messed up my ankle again (already had 3 surgeries on it) and the theropy only seems to make it worse. This is pretty much just to pass the time til I can get home and get a MRI. Best of luck buddy and I wish you a speedy recovery!

I would not want to give anyone the option of blaming riding for the injury. All it takes is suspicion. Plus I would want to focus on the injury getting better. I also know the exploritory surgery would be my choice. Good luck and I hope you get it figured out....

If you are on your knees a lot at work you should be using cushioned knee pads. I am not on them that much an wear them. It helps, if you are favoring that knee wear something for the other or both if you still using it at all. Sorry i know this doesn't help with your problem.

I would stay off the bike going to work till it is all settled.

Knees are weird little items. My knee is the size of a softball since my wreck with all kinds of fluid on it. it really doesn't hurt much, but if I was to take a whack on it i am sure it would. My doc wont pull off the fluid cuz he is affraid of infection.
Good luck with ever being 100%.
