Why wearing a helmet matters.

So back on July 15 2017 I was involved with providing an escort for about 75 bikes for a charity ride with an organization called F.R.A.B.A.A. Its a great group of people and a great cause. In the video if you look in the top right you will see the crash. An elderly guy got tired of waiting and tried to cross the road with all those bikes still coming. I hit him towards the back of the car and got launched. Nothing broken but I hit my head hard. Got a TBI with a brain bleed and deep concussion. I was off 4 almost 4 months. I recovered well enough to get back to work but man, what a mess. I was wearing a shoei neotech helmet. A good helmet. It saved my life for sure. I don't remember the accident but you can tell I saw it at the last second and tried to go left behind him. best choice really. Point is this. Sometimes you cant avoid the accident. And if it can happen to me running emergency equipment then it can happen to us all. So for those of you that don't wear a helmet either at all or at times please, please consider doing so.

Glad you made out ok. IME group rides through city streets need better intersection control. They're dangerous enough riding solo

I always wear a lid , it is mandatory in Australia , but would anywhere anyway . Been catapulted by cars into hard things to know .....Spending your hard earned on a good helmet is always a good investment .

Had I not been wearing my Shoei when I crashed in 2007 I would be dead... I dented the door and top of the cab with my head...

i may should have explained better. it was me. I am a Motor Officer here in Dayton Ohio. I dont usually get into my work but this accident and the visual lesson learned from it was too important to me not to share with the people that share the same passion as I do. And thanks for the good wishes.

Wow, I had no idea you'd had this happen! That could have been so much worse, and all we can do is wear the gear for all of those "didn't see it coming" moments. I went down almost a year ago, just one of those things...nearly every bit of impact on me was to my helmet, along one side where my face was being protected. Every time I look at that lid, I think to myself just how minor the whole incident was vs. how bad it would have been had I been wearing a half-helmet, or no helmet at all. I would have left my face on the pavement.

To each his/her own, but you don't care about that lid until you go down. That's the only time it'll matter.

I'm glad your still here to remind those that choose to ride without - that it can make a big difference.

I for one don't want to eat bugs and the wind noise has got be be greater without a helmet.
But we all have to make decisions every day and I can't control anyone but me.

lol. good 1. i appreciate the good wishes. sadly i know im not the only 1 this sort of thing has happened to. lordy captain you hit that truck hard. glad Your ok. i was lucky enough to evidently see the car at the last second and swerved left. almost made it. lol. . I probably would have just hit something else .lol

I always cringe when I see someone riding without a helmet. One of the excuses I hear people use is that it is to hot wearing one. I always tell them that I have yet to have sweat soaked hair even on a 90°+ day, good helmets are surprising well ventilated.

When I started riding in 2002 riding without a helmet was illegal in Pennsylvania and then a few years later riding without a helmet was legalized so I tried it one day and didn't like. To much wind in my face, my face was exposed to whatever happened to be flying around in my path and I didn't like the idea my head was totally unprotected. Riding without a helmet is fine until you go down and your head hits the ground then it's not fun anymore. I'd never consider riding without a helmet, motorcycle accidents can be bad with a helmet and deadly without one.
