Trip Meter Quandary

OK yes I am one of those who own something for a couple years and then out of the blue one day wonder "hhhmmmmmm I wonder how this works". This time I'm refering to the trip meter, read the owner's manual and it really dosen't go into detail, zero'd out both of them but I'm curious as to how you select which one is in use and what is the intended purpose of two trip meters? Someone want to enlighten me? This is probably so elementry.

One for total miles traveled on the RIDE. The other for total miles traveled on that tank of gas, it gets zero'd at every fill up.

Or you could use trip 2 for any number if things.
Tire mileage, oil change, mileage per day, it's up to you.

They both operate all the time. I hadn't given it any thought either. Use to track fuel mileage on one and ignore the other one
