The starting problems start!

a couple bike shops confirmed my suspicion that the starter clutch was seizing up on the shaft. Tonight I'm heating up the assembly with a heat gun to replicate the issue

Yeah any news mine does the same thing I just live with it As long as it starts I am happy I am not picky an real easy to please.....

Well I can't just live with it because I can't stop to get fuel, or stop anywhere without leaving in an hour to cool. Been in the hospital with my wife and newborn for 2 weeks. When I get the money and time I will buy my starter clutch and get to work.

If anyone has a lead on a Starter Clutch please let me know. Things are tight lately living up here at the hospital and Ronald Mcdonald House. But i need to get the bike running to save on gas. A guy should be coming to get my srt-10 next week and i need transportation.

Try Ohio Kawasaki Suzuki Motorcycle ATV Dealer - Wheelsport Center, but don't order online. Call them up, ask for parts department and say you are looking for a good deal on whatever part you need. I've ordered from them in the past (on someone's advise) a couple of times and their prices were unbelievable compared to any other place. Don't be shy and tell them the money is tight.

I was thinking of this on page 3.....
I have an 03, bought with 910 miles last year, have 3100 miles now.. spins over fast no problems.. I would rather pay a little more for a bike, thats tip top, then know there is any issue from the very beginning...
I feel for yea, I wouldn't want to go out either knowing that the bike could act up and leave me stranded...
there's been a lot of responses to get you back on the road again, thats what so great about this forum, alot of good people out there..

I understand well that a lot of people judge me on this, and everyone just like myself see everything I've done hindsight 20/20. But at the time I found an incredible bike. Extremely low miles responding exactly like the owner warned. Bad starter. I DID buy a $60 battery to replace the marginal one it had. And after days of spending hours tracking down and eliminating all the possibilities the good people of the forum advised I learned so much about the bike. I tore down and re assembled everything but the motor and honestly had a blast doing it. It racked my brain troubleshooting but I'm a gearhead and enjoyed thinking through the possibilities.

I've spent $160 total and I consider the time Invested, merely time enjoying a hobby I have a passion for. I bought the best bike I could afford at this time of my life, and I do what repairs I'm capable of at home.

unfortunately when I discovered the problem my family ended up on hard times. Been in the hospital 3 weeks with a premature newborn.

Through the generous hearts and Christmas spirit of the vendors of this forum, a company is donating a starter clutch and said "Pay when your back on your feet" but wanted to remain anonymous. Should be in mail Monday.

All dealerships I've talked to about my issue and the troubleshooting ice done told me I did everything they would have. And if I have done all this I'm capable to repair this myself. When I get my baby home I will square this away.

I remember the pay it forum cam to the board I was one of the fist to give,and get something,I am it came through for you like it was intended for. The 02 busa had the problem and the fix was a 03 up starter/gear/clutch.OR I put a yusa 14 instead of the stock.This made the bike start like a NORMAL 03-07 should start,When I built the motor I did a 24vold starting system, I got a very small batt wrapped it in heat reflecting tape and put it on top of the motor on the left side of the motor if your are sitting on the bike, It will start no matter how hot it gets everytime. Try the gear,clutch,if that will not help I can send you pics, the batt was only $28 bucks, this can fix the prob,if all else fails.

Its factory installed part. I hope not. They all will look a little heated. It evidently overheated bad when the previous owner attempted to start it too much with a dead battery.

The thing of concern with this picture is the uneven heating.

This is whats causing my hard starting when its hot. Its seizing up on the bearings as a result.

The little springs and clutches are unevenly applied i guess

I just read this entire thread.

Not to compare apples to oranges but I had the exact same issues on my
HONDA CRF450X. I went through 3 batterys, checked cables,amp draw etc.Spent countless hours beating my head against the wall. Only to find out it was the starter clutch the whole time.

OK guys, just an update on my bike.

2006 Busa that would NOT start after running it for an hour or more.

I suspected a regulator since initially the batt needs a higher voltage to top itself off, but after running overcharged for a while it caused the batt to sulfate and loose charge.

Bear in mind that amp and voltage tests indicated all was well within normal parameters even though I found that at times, while running at 5k rpms the voltage seemed rather high at 15 volts almost. These are sealed batts and they do not need such high saturation voltages and float charge should never be over 13.2-13.7volts, thus a charger that never charges it over 2 amps.

Well, I skipped all other tests and went to the rectifier/regulator test and there were a lot of diodes that showed open.

In sumary, a new reg is in order.

The starter clutch didn't fix mine. It was he idler gear and the shaft or pin it rides on. Bike is fixed. I pick it up this week.
