tail light bulbs

I bought some led bulbs for the stock tail lights on my 2000, but I am having trouble fitting them, the manufacturer says they should fit, and sent me a picture of a first gen bike and sure enough they fit. Did the housing change somewhere along the way? it looks the same but it is not.

Looks stock but I guess it's possible.
