Surfaces....  Concrete, salt, asphalt...

I'm looking to set a personal record under a controlled circumstance. I could go to the salt flats, or an airport.

I want to go ~180, definitely over 165. I want to relax and experience it, not be worried about cops or deer.

If its on concrete, i'd like it to be as wide as a runway with no other traffic, guaranteed.

are the salt flats really slippery and do they require constant correction?

With leathers, is a crash at that speed really dangerous on concrete or salt?

Is there anything else I should be worried about?

Thanks guys!

Brian,

I see that you are from North Carolina. This Thanksgiving I went 180 on the speedometer on I 40 going from Raleigh towards Wilmington. It was early in the morning around 7:30 am. There was a long straight stretch that I hit with no cars in sight, so I opened it up. I felt that this would be a good day to do it since I assumed that cops have to spend thanksgiving with their family too. And being that it was early morning there was no traffic. I'm willing to try this again if but I'm looking for someone to video tape it...

The ride was extremely smooth and did not worry about crashing. I suppose that if I did fall off I would have been toast. But I could die driving the speed limit in traffic...

I was at 9K rpms in 6th so I know there is some room to go faster...

Dude, try the link below if you want to top it out. It ain't friggin' worth it on the street, especially when you live in the same state as something like this. You may even be really close to it.

Oh, and I figure a crash at 180+ will fug you up regardless of what you're wearing or what type of surface you are runnin' on. All you can really hope for at that speed is that your head passes by your ass you so at least get to kiss it goodbye.

Anything else to worry about? Hmmm... Start saving for skin grafts and bone plates unless you have insurance that will cover all that. It'll be hard enough for your family to care for your vegetable ass without having to worry about paying for your treatment.

Brian,

BT is giving you some good advice. Save it for the track. Considering that you live in NC, you should be going to the airstrip in Maxton (ECTA). Next years races will be in March, April, May, June, September and October. All races are on Saturday and Sunday only (usually the last week of the month).

I have raced there a couple of times, so give me a PM or email me some time and I can help you get ready.

The track is an old airstrip 1.9 miles long. You run a standing mile with two timing lights at the end of the run. The cost is about $125 for the bike and $50 for your ECTA membership (good for all year).

Forgot to mention it, but I have been to the salt flats also. The cost is about $600 for the week. You will also pay quite a bit for hotel rooms (about $100 night) considering you will be there about 5 days.

The plus of going to the flats is you get a 7 mile stretch of vast, flat, featurless track to ride on. The scenery alone almost makes it worth the trip. You can gamble in the casinos on the Nevada side of town (the state line runs through town).

The negatives are that the salt is a little slick (like wet pavement) and you will probably only get 5-10 runs in. Also, the salt is murder on all of the metal and aluminum on your bike. It really eats things up pretty bad. It is also a very long drive, and you will have to use vacation time to race. You also have to trailer or tow your bike back to the starting line. You cannot ride it back.

You can expect a salt trip to cost around $2000 (gas, hotels, food, racing). Overall, I am glad I raced on the flats once, but I don't know if I will do it again.

I hope this helps answer you questions.

I heard the salt is hard on your bike......makes it rust cuz you get it under everything...

Damn that's some fast riding my friends:O . 180MPH. I'll let you guys do that and I'll be your cheerleader and hope that my bike has the capability to get at least 165-170. So far I've only had it up to 120 (speedo indicated) and it was a pretty smooth ride with more throttle to go, and my only mod is a TRE. That alone gives me the pleasure of knowing that once the exhaust and other goodies are added, I'll feel cpmfortable that I have the ability to get to 165-170, but I'll probably never personally know what it feels like:laugh: .

Keep 'em rolling guyz,

Hey Speed King,

I can only assume that you are Steve? Correct? I hadn't seen the Project 260 since it was painted. I met Larry at the flats in August 02 while on a quest for a clutch lever. Larry was good enough to give me a spare.

Your pics look like they could have come from my bike (except for the turbo). It was pretty ate up.
Glad you made it through the run OK on the salt. Larry told me there were some problems, but I am sure you will get it figured out this year.

Any plans to bring that brute to Maxton and give Yancys Bud Bike a run for its money?

Welcome aboard
