Maybe I ought to ride up and find out.

Heading south is not an option as Big Sur has been evacuated due to fires but the weather on the north coast is supposed to be in the 60s-70s and sunny.

Its OK now, north of Monterey but a few days ago it was pretty smokey. Golden sunsets were cool though. Hopefully no fires of any size north of here.

I called the Mayor (Jerry Sanders) last Monday and asked him to send up a few of our batallions. I got a report just yesterday that they'd arrived and were already at the front lines.

(Note to self: Send a thank you stripper to the Mayor's office.)

Additionally, I've asked the Governor of Arizona to lend a hand. We'll see.

Please give me a status report when you can, brother.

I saw Los Angeles and Orange County trucks up here a few weeks ago fighting fires in the mountain area west of Felton, off hiway 9 north of Santa Cruz. That type of fire fighting is tough work!

Good idea...I'll mention that in a note which I'll give to the stripper to 'hand' deliver.

Apparently its pretty bad near Big Sur.

"Some people defied orders to evacuate the Big Sur area and stayed behind to try to save their homes and businesses from the blaze, which has burned 100 square miles of the Los Padres National Forest and destroyed at least 17 homes."

Kirk Gafill, general manager of the popular cliffside Nepenthe Restaurant, said he and five employees were up all night trying to protect the business his grandparents built in 1949. Wearing dust masks, the crew scrambled to stamp out embers, the size of dinner plates, dropping from the sky, he said.

"We know fire officials don't have the manpower to secure our properties," Gafill said. "There are a lot of people in this community not following evacuation orders. Based on what we saw during Katrina and other disasters, we know we can only rely on ourselves and our neighbors."

The raging blaze near Big Sur was one of more than 1,700 wildfires, mostly ignited by lightning, that have scorched nearly 800 square miles and destroyed more than 60 structures across northern and central California since June 20, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The air near Big Sur was thick with smoke and ash, and flames licked the forested hills above the coastal highway. The blaze was only about 3 percent contained and wasn't expected to be fully surrounded until the end of the month.

Authorities have ordered evacuations for homes and businesses along a 25-mile stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway, but many property owners chose to remain in the fire zone at their own risk.

Wierd seeing Nepenthe appear in your post. I had lunch there with four others about 5 months ago.

Glad they were able to save it. It's totally an institution.

If you click on that link, you can look through their 'web cam'. Check out the smoke.

Crazy, ya'll.

Indeed.

And to think they're starting to have earthquakes in the midwest now.

California still looks like 'land of the blessed' comparatively.

Actually no earthquakes, just floods. Your burning up and we're being drowned. 3 weekends ago it rained 5 inches, 2 weekends ago it rained 3.5 inches, last weekend it rained 4 inches, rained today, supposed to rain tomorrow and the next day. Just starting the 7th month and we're 24 inches over for the whole year on precipitation. you couldn't start a fire here with gasoline.

Au contraire~mon cher...

The largest most potentially devastating tectonic plate fault is located in the midwest (I think it runs parallel to the Mississippi River).

My mom has a ranch in Missouri and I'm originally from Wisconsin; so I've been paying close attention to the flooding. Hope you're doing all right.

There was an earthquake in the midwest within the last few months, brother. Yes. Seems to me there was. Everyone was in shock (no pun intended).

Thanks, its a great ride too. The road hugs the edge of California in and out and in and out pretty much all the way. The 'Lost Coast' stretch is actually pretty straight, and short, but its (very) remote! I think I'll take the 82 CBX for a ride. She really loves the cool coastal breeze.

That would be the New Madrid fault. It's last slip was the huge 1811-1812 quakes that caused a section of the Mississippi river floor to raise setting off the famous case of the "Mississippi river running backwards", there was also reported to be at least two 8' to 12' waterfalls in the river for a while until another shock put it back to more or less normal. The quakes were also responsible for making Reelfoot Lake south of St Louis. They say its over 60 years overdue to slip again. I heard about the tremor a few months back that rattled a lot of area east of the Mississippi, fortunatly here in the western part of the state we felt nothing. We're reportedly more geologicaly stable and shouldn't be affected if/when it does shake again. Springfield is even labeled as a major refugee center after a New Madrid quake, oh joy.

As for the floods, I personaly, other than a bumper crop of Mosquitos and not being able to ride much, am doing fine. The lakes areas are suffering a double whammy from gas prices killing tourism and the lakes themselves being up from 20' to 40' (depending on which lake) and wrecking a lot of docks and waterfront businesses.
This time last summer we were facing water rationing from record drought.
