Sand down wheels?

So I want silver wheels and am about to buy some already powdercoated silver but I thought today I could just sand down the paint on the wheels. I know having the aluminum showing would require regular polishing to make it look good but has anyone done this?

If you want a polished lip its easier to buy a can of air craft stripper and use it on a rag and wipe down just the part you want to polish. Polish it then wipe it down again and clear coat it and permapolish lol

I have an aerosol can of aircraft stripper. I guess i could use that.

do you want a polished lip or a silver wheel? if you sand the wheel with 600 grit most paints will fill the grooves...silver or other color...you don't need to sand into the aluminium wheel

I want a silver wheel. Figured taking the black paint off is the easiest route for the time being. Plus I think I may like the raw aluminum of the wheel polished better than a silver powdercoat.

You should use an aluminum safe stripper so it doesn't mess up the wheel and then just get ta polishing with a dremel or some other buffing wheel.

Just sand them down like a brushed nickle finish and clear coat them. PPG gloss or flat finish.

if you have time chemical strip the paint off...blast off etc...if you use paint stripper then you have less bs when it comes time to balance / polish...the polish and buff effort pays off...at the same time a chrome wheel is less maintence with a similar shine. I have polished frames and wheels...is you keep up on them / wipe them with mothers or some other brand they will look like a mirror. silver paint is far apart from polished Al or chrome. chrome gets dirty the same way a painted or polished part would + it chips like paint would...the polished parts can be sanded and buffed out...you would have 2 hrs max to buff black painted wheels to look like mirrors...$30 worth of sanding discs and buffing compound / pads

Yeah.. I think I would be happier with polished Al vs silver powdercoating.

I will pick up some mild stripper at autozone and grab a few different types of sand paper and some buffing stuff. I already have 400grit

if you strip the paint / hand sand with 400 / 600 / 800 then hit with a buff deal from harbor freight with red / brown / whiye rouge...you will see the shine. the pain is seeing casting marks...so i go back and take them out. you can buff out 800 grit sand paper marks....if you use 1200 grit paper it will buff out too but the added time is not really worth it. black wheels hide the chain lube...polished ones stand out...next your frame will be polished...swing arm....more riding less work is my suggestion have fun with it

buy a can of liquid stripper its alot stronger and you will be suprised how close to smooth it probably already is and if it is you just take a polishing wheel to it and be done... alot less work

I polished my lips on mind. I used tal strip paint remover in the aerosol can. I taper the parts of the wheel that I did not want stripped. I used two cans per wheel. Came out looking poslished.

that aircraft stripper is nasty stuff.Try bead blasting it with a light media. It will take the paint off as well do a light polish and less harsh than sanding.
