Does anyone know where to get a good inexpensive lazer gun or radar gun?

Not legally! :)

Seriously -
There are some lower grade radar guns sold by outfits that sell racing parts. Seems like Racer's Wholesale has them? I've forgotten how much they were exactly - I *think* they were under $500. I shudder everytime I see the damn things.

The site that Sherm provided has a refurbished X band unit for $199! I don't think you can do much better than that. Good find Sherm.

Woops - it only reads target speeds up to 140 mph - about the time the Busa just starts to stretch her legs!

This outfit has an acceleration testing system for $2500. It provides the radar gun, software and a serial computer interface to your laptop. I'm not into dyno testing but it looks like this system plus a 1/2 mile of straight road could make a real fun alternative to the dyno for dialing in your PCII. You could see real world performance for each setting.

Yeah Todd, you have to get into the pricier models to get one that works above 200 mph. Their PRO model goes up to 300 mph but cost $1500 new.

I assume you want to measure your speed accurately... Not quite as CONVENIENT as a radar gun, but much more accurate and cheaper, is a dual beam system.

You set up two light beams (infra red) at a set distance, ride your bike between them and the timer measures your speed with great accuracy.

These are available at gun stores, for measuring projectile speed with guys who load their own ammo(!), also model airplane hobbyists use similar stuff for measuring propellor speed and airspeed at competitions. You could probably get something cheap from these sources and modify it to your needs.

You don't want to know how much the proper (ie, Police) radar guns and stuff cost...

Just wanted one for measuring my runs plus taking it to events like Daytona.Plus wouldnt it be cool to radar a cop that is speeding without his lights on or going to an emergency and let his superiors know?

Gixxer1300R,the best bet to catch anyone doing the wrong thing is to use a camcorder or digital camcorder you would have real proof instead of the radar gun.We have used GPS to measure speed but I'll talk to my 2meter friends who full around with GPS units to find the best unit for measuring accurte speed.

The best GPS's are Garmin's. Whatever you do don't buy a Magellan. They look great with lots of features but are pure junk.

I have a Garmin GPSMAP 175 handheld for sailboat racing but it has a builtin ROM chip with major roads on it too. It's an excellent little tool. It's extremely accurate too. Walk across the lawn with it in hand and it will tell you your speed and direction to within 0.1 mph or knots.

There is a version of the Garmin that could be mounted on your bars (I saw a picture of one here). That will give you speed numbers at a fraction of the cost and hassle of a radar set.

I dropped my Garmin CPS off my truck at 75mph on a Utah highway, bounced 8 feet in the air, landed on the shoulder [nice], works perfectly, minus the scratches.
