I called Progressive from the Suzuki dealer's showroom the Saturday that I bought my new Bus because they were the only insurance company that I could get in touch with on a Saturday afternoon. First the guy says $94 a year, which I knew could not e right, then after another try he comes up with $1900 a year. I am 37 years old, homeowner, married for 13 years. I didn't have much choice, so I gave him my cash card number and made him run it for the $267 that he wanted to get me up and running. I thought about it over the weekend, and I just wasn't comfortable with these people, so on Monday I made one call and saved myself $800 and got a smaller deductible. I called Progressive on Saturday (one week later) and cancelled. They said that they would send me my refund check. About a week later, I instead got a statement from them demanding ANOTHER $380 for the week that they insured me. They said that it was due to an "at fault" accident on my DMV report, and the tone of the conversation was very different than before they had the ability to extort money out of me. I told them that the "at fault" accident that they referred to was last year during spring break when a 22 year old kid floored it to try to beat a red light and T-boned me going about 55 miles an hour according to the witnesses. Kid was cited by the police for speeding and blowing the light. Progressive says that it was up to me to provide "proof" that the accident was not my fault, but it's a moot point now because once I cancelled the policy, it is not possible to make any changes. They also want to jack me for 10% of the "new and improved" yearly premium. The other two insurance companys that I do usiness with appear to have had no trouble figuring out the DMV report, but it appears to benefit Progressive financially to not be able to figure out the DMV report. DMV says that Progressive has been warned about pulling this stunt before. I'm filing a complaint with the state Insurance Comission. I wanted to warn you all and hopefully save someone else some headaches.
