part on front sprocket

I have a question. When you take off the allen screw on the front sprocket, what is the 4 edged part for? It looks like a nut but it is hollow except the corners of it. Is that part of the speedometer? Thanks in advance.

thanks dan. So its no big deal that i stepped on it and broke off one of the four corners. I know stupid ash!!!!!!1

That will be a big deal only when your speedo says 150 and you're really going 200.
HINT: 150 is the middle of fourth gear, not the top of sixth (stock gearing).
