the way I have always done the links is: I put the bike up on the rearstand and take a small hydraulic jack and stick it underneath the rear shock. No tension on the jack just barely snug. After the jack is set take your bolts out of the links, then you can raise or lower the shock to the settings that you want and put your bolts back in.
