I always ride with a back pack, usualy to take my lunch/ water bottles to work, and to take my school supplys with me before that. I've been down twice, both with my back pack full 'o cr@p, and I've had no problems, aside from 2 damaged back packs.

I'm going down to Marin County on Friday to visit a friend and stay overnight.  On Saturday, I want to go to the races at Sears Point (Infinion) on the way back to Sacramento.

I need to bring a change of clothes.  I see kids all the time riding their 600s to school with backpacks on.  Is this a good idea?  Is it safe?  I'll just be carrying some socks, shorts and a rolled up pair of slacks.  Toothbrush, etc... I have to buy a back pack this week if it works.

Opinions really appreciated.  Thanks!

I ride with a backpack every day to/from work. I've also gone on week long trips wearing a backpack with supplies. It does add weight that you need to carry the distance.

Watch your hump. My back pack was rubbing on the top of my hump almost scuffed it before I noticed and switched to back seat when I wear my pack. Im not a tall guy though so this may not be a problem for everyone.
+1 on the hump scratches....I went with the magnetic tank bag and a Cortech tail bag to carry my stuff.

I use a Cargo backback which is designed for motorcyclests. Wear it to work everyday with no problems.

I used to use a back pack but like a few said above, it blocked the ventalation of the jacket i wore, and it makes your back all sweaty and I didnt like that on road trips. So i bought a 2 part magnetic tank bag and saddle bags if i need them as well as a tail bag. Sounds like a regular size mag. tank bag would do you some good on a trip like this. I only use the backpack if i really have to now on the bike, just uncomfortable to me to wear for very long...

Another thing that might be worth mentioning as i havent read every post above mine is that you may need to check with the race track to see if you can even bring the backpack into the track area. They might have a policy in place that says you cant bring it in...

I gave up on back pack long ago. Now I either use different size tank bags I own or my saddle bags for the size of load I'm carrying or my rear top case.

I hate that you can't delete posts here when the browser jacks it up.

I ride to work and college with my gaming laptop and a few books in my
backpack with it for college. Bag probably weighs a good 30lbs...

Yeah it's fine. Long distance with a heavy bag isn't recommended.
But short runs, yeah.

My lady bought me a serious camping backpack (tall, but not wide), which I take to work each day. It's a hideous yellow, which I think makes me more visible to soccer moms and other caged killers. Built in waist belt holds it on tightly.
