Road mine to the DMV, about a week after purchase. Back in 1987. Licensed ever since.

I did the MSF and got my endorsement upon passing the class. Took it down the DL place, plopped $10 on th counter, got a new pic and a new license with an endorsement. That was in April or 04

got mine by taking the MSF and then going to dmv and taking the written. An officer told me they are really hard on bikers who take the driving test on the rode, to try and encourage them to take the class

Licensed since '01. Took the written at DMV then the MSF courses. Passed and submitted my MSF certificate to DMV and got my Endorsement right there. All they do here in Cali is add 'M1' to the Class C license. I did it BEFORE I bought my Gixxer 600.

Got mine in 86 and the driving test is a biatch on a sportbike ! Cones are real close and you almost have to idle thru the whole thing , weaving back and forth . Put the foot down 1 time and you fail .

I got mine through the MSF course back in 1996. It was a piece of cake on those little bikes they have. I would highly recommend going that route rather than just going down to the DMV.

Got my motorcycle endorsement in 1978.  It's required in CT to legally ride on the street.  The test wasn't that difficult (written test and practical test - ride around some cones, etc).  The practical is a little more difficult now.  Very similar to what you do on the range in the MSF BRC.  You should take the MSF BRC first.  In CT, the practical test you take in the MSF BRC waives the practical component of the motorcycle test required by the state.  Unfortunately, the written test you take in the MSF BRC DOES NOT negate the need to take the state written motorcycle test.  Most riders working towards a motorcycle endorsement in CT are more worried about the practical test than they are about the written test.  Though, the practical test is not hard (it's just that the written test is much easier).

I don't know what Texas requires to obtain a motorcycle endorsement.

Though, I would consider borrowing a smaller, more easily maneuverable bike than a 'Busa.   Why make life harder than it needs to be?

Here in WI it's just an endorsement on your current license. But yes, you need it. If you're caught driving without it, it's no different than driving a car without a license.
It's the same here in FL.. I think... I hope rather... Kevin was just being humorless.. ummmm humorous~
You're right, I was being humorless, it's easy for me you know.

Now being serious, I never took the msf course, I had never heard of it so I just went to the dmv, got the permit, rode around for a little while until I was comfortable. I read the moto handbook that explained what had to be done on the test, practiced with all the cones in the church parking lot, then went early one morning to take the test. I took it on a nighthawk 450. The instructor said that I had no deductions and passed with a perfect score. It sure wasn't from my years of experience, I don't know, maybe it was the small bike.

The MSF is the way to go here in WA. I'm not sure I could have passed the test without the course. I've had mine since 04. Not so much about the rules but the basic skills they teach you in the MSF. Emergency stops and swerving to avoid objects safely etc. That was the easy part - the hard part for me was the figure eights in a 16 ft box without putting your foot down. Why you have to do that is beyond me?

I had a WERA race license for 2 years before I got my street bike license. Always just got the learners permit and rode on that. I took my test on a 172hp GSXR1000

I am 41 yrs experienced and I have had my cycle endorsement since 1988 and my class D Chauffeur's license since 1992. Apparently in New Orleans, LA if you can flip someone the finger and drive like you have been on a methaamphetamine trip while watching Mad Max for four days straight you should be able to operate a motor vehicle (Since the storm it has only gotten worse). But as far as obtaining the cycle endorsement it was a written test and some figure 8's in the parking lot. Back then it was my GS750ES so that was easy. I definitely recommend getting the big M. Anytime you get pulled over it is in your favor to have all of your paperwork, including endorsement in order. Ask any LEO on the board and they will problably tell you that even if you are doing something to be pulled over for it goes a long way if you have everything registered, insured, and licensed properly. Get that endorsement and enjoy a little more peice of mind...

Definitely take the rider course if it's in your area- I took mine in DE and passed with flying colors. Watched a friend try to pass the test at the MVA in MD when it was his time, and not only did he fail the test, he dropped his own bike..
