Apple released iPhone iOS 4.0 today...free!

Simple to upgrade: just upgrade iTunes to 9.2 and then "check for updates" on your iPhone.

Sorry to redirect for a bit but im curious about something.
I see 'factory unlocked' iPhones on Ebay. Sellers have 100% pos feedback and say you can update firmware as normal with no worries cuz it's factory unlocked. I'm guessing these are Intl phones. If i get one of these for my dad and send it to him would he be able to simply take the sim card out of his phone put it in new iPhone and have it work ? Second could one buy these factory unlocked phones and use it here in USA with another carrier ?

I may be wrong, but I believe those are international intended iphones. Meaning they will work on any carrier that uses a sim card. That would include US carriers except verizon. I don't know if your Dad would just be able to stick his sim in and go depending on his rate and data plan. I'm not sure how the international iphone plans work...

Vega the Intl Iphone plans are 'open' is what they call it .
There is no contract per say . Pops carrier now is 'Cytanet' .
He pays every month in a fashion similar to 'Boost' or Metro Pcs' , flat rate for unlimited calls and then on top of that it's 15 euros for 2gb of data .
If you buy an iPhone there it comes in same box , same style and you then can take it to whatever carrier you wish . I put his sim in my iPhone and it said 'locked sim' ?
Yes I believe the ones on Ebay are same as ones I saw there just not as expensive .
I would like to get him one and send it over there for him to use .

That said, it sounds like it would work to me... His sim won't work in your iphone because it is locked, whereas the factory unlocked ones on ebay are intended for that... Best of luck to you!

Ok I upgraded to os4 this morning and other than seeing my background pic under all the homescreen icons what else am I able to do now or what am I looking for as far as changes ?

the biggest deal is apps running in the background... Just double tap your home button and you can switch between apps now instead of having to close one completely to open another......

You should also have folders. Those of us who are jailbroken have had these features for awhile. Thanks apple for holding out on everyone.

The apps have to be re-written to run in the background... But yeah, that's good that it's finally there.

If so how do I create one ?

On the apps I only have about a dozen or so .
How do I 'rewrite' them so they can run simultaneously ?

To use folders take one app and 'move and drop' it on another app, preferably an app you would like to group with the other one.

You cannot rewrite the app, the original writer of the app would have to do that.

A friend of mine tried to upgrade his 3GS this morning, and it crashed. He called Apple tech support and did everything they told him to do, and nothing worked. He will probably have to take his phone in to AT&T and have them replace it with a refurbished one. He wasn't too thrilled. I updated mine with no problem.

It's pretty sad a lot of the features that have been available to jailbroken iphones is just now making its way into the actual Apple software.

You can also download and use ibooks from the app store now if that's your thing...

Mine was done in 56 minutes .

Took over an hour to download/backup/sync to latest version of itunes to get ready for the upgrade. Another hour at least to download 300+meg 4.0 software, and then another 45 to upgrade/backup/sync phone with new software. I'm on DSL and sharing a connection which slowed me down some.
