One thing one should do before upgrading ANY firmware - whether or not one jaibreaks - is to save the SHSH blobs. Look at the following link for a tutorial:

I understood the basics of jailbreaking. Just seems there are too many options and what ifs. I have iphone4 so imnot sure I wanna try it.

I'm using an iPhone 4 with no problems; used Limera1n to JB it. See my previous post about saving the SHSH blobs. If you're still running iOS 4.1, JB should be uneventful. If you upgraded to 4.2.1, you'll want to wait to JB.
