"I will let you go because you stopped" - first one for me

It happened a few weeks ago here on Long Island, right by Jones Beach. I've heard the stories before, and the recent thread reminded me to post. That's the short version.

If you care, here is the longer version. It was a fine Friday morning. And what's the best way to start your day? Of course, go for quick ride, and only then go to work. So, I do my usual 20 mile circle which involves Meadowbrook and Jones Beach for those who know. I am aware of all the spots, and pick my places very conservatively, especially after my 121/50 in '07. So, anyway I pass a statie who later turned out to be a she, and she is busy with another dude. So, I pass them at measly 60, glance in the mirror and go for the bridge and the left sweeper going to Ocean Pkwy. After the sweeper I slow down, and who do I see right next to me? You guessed it - my fair lady.

So, I pull over into the exit ramp to one of the fields, and stop close to the grass, but wheels are still on the road for obvious reason. She picks up the mike and blasts me: "PULL ON THE GRASS!!!". So, I slowly moved on the grass, extened my kickstand and fiddling with a small stone I saw - pushing it with my left foot under the kickstand. Finally, I put the bike's kickstand on the stone, and give her my paperwork.

Her first words: "YOU JUST SAW ME ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WHY WHERE YOU DOING 80?"

I said: "Sorry, I went a little faster, but there were practically no cars. Safety is my primary concern", or something along the lines. The funny thing was I wasn't sure at the time whether he was a she, so I was trying to avoid words "Sir" or "Ma'am" being afraid to make a mistake and piss him/her off.

What I thought was: "How the heck you could get in your car and drive after me so quickly?", and a moment later: "I am glad you didn't catch to me 30 sec earlier".

She looked at my paperwork briefly and said: "I AM LETTING YOU GO BECAUSE YOU STOPPED. BUT SLOW DOWN". Whew!

In retrospect this is the second time it happened to me: you pass a cop, and they jump right after you staying back, more likely in a different lane and with no lights. So, they follow you and see if you gun it.

Here is my other thread on the subject.

Didja go to jail for the 121?

No. I guess the statie had other plans, or I was plain lucky. Maybe my full leathers played a role, cause his first words were: "At least you are wearing safety gear."

As I was sitting there on the side of the road, I was praying for only one thing - don't take my bike. I guess he replaced all that with a 3 min lecture he gave me. Never mind that. I was wearing earplugs, and couldn't hear half of what he was saying.

After he gave me the tickets (speeding, and following too closely), his last words were: "You will lose your license". Well, more than a year after the incident, the lawyer did his job. I still got 15 points on the license, but kept it. He also managed to reduce the fine to something $200+ as opposed to something really big.

The funny thing is if I wasn't too nice, this would've never happened. There was a lot of empty space on the road in front of me, but I stuck behind a few cars taking all three lanes. I decided not to scare drivers by splitting lanes, and was just hanging in there for an extra 30 sec, and as soon as I got the opening, I went for it. So, did the unmarked who also stuck behind. If I went through between the cars, the unmarked cop would've stuck behind, and would've never caught up to me. But, we'll never know.

Needless to say, I am no longer that nice. :moon:

i (and others here) have been to jail for just flying along unaware there was 5-0 behind, trying to catch up.
you got lucky there man:thumbsup:

back when it seemed i got stopped by a motorcycle cop every other week, i always got off cause "i stopped." granted majority of the time i didnt even know y i got stopped in the 1st place, but a few times i was speeding. but ever since AZ got the photo radar cameras on the freeway 2 years ago, i see a motor cop MAYBE once every 3-4 months.

lol, i've been told the cops around here don't even bother chasing bikes anymore. too many deer, too many twisty back roads to vanish on.

What I thought was: "How the heck you could get in your car and drive after me so quickly?", and a moment later: "I am glad you didn't catch to me 30 sec earlier".

:laugh: That was EXACTLY what I was thinking when I got popped for 78 in a 65. I was at 130 last time I'd looked down after the on-ramp. For some reason I just got a funny feeling and backed off.

Sure enough about a half mile later there's a CHP on a bike pulling me over.

All I'm thinking is "God**mn-it I'm going to jail. F**k f**k f**k f**k."

Later on the wife says "So what did we learn from this?" I said, "I need a radar detector."

She didn't like that answer.

I'm thinking it would have been much worse for you had you split lanes instead of passing properly (yet way over the speed limit).

I doubt she had any radar read on you. Just a seat of the pants estimate. Any way it happened you lucked out and that's a good thing.

cops do this to me all the time I have had leo do this to me that were out of their jurisdiction. They climb into the blind spot just waiting for ya to do something... kinda why I ride like there is always one there, they look so disappointed they get tired an race on buy:laugh: maybe I should start making complaints about their driving for racing on by at a high rate of speed:rofl:

JK

Relax ...... I am just :poke: a little fun I got better things to do with my free time.

That's NEGATIVE, soldier. I never split lanes much faster than traffic - only 5-10 mph faster. I would slow down to go between cars, and then accelerate again. The cars were doing 60 - 65 in a 50 zone. But like I said, who knows, maybe the cop was among the first 3 cars, and then it wouldn't matter.

Oh, well...

Hey did I tell you a funny story about what happened a few years ago? I was riding to a track day (saddlebags, and all) and my EZ-pass didn't work because I am so smart and put it under the seat. Taking saddlebags off, etc. So, the cop decides to check my paperwork. Turns out my license has expired. Stupid DMV never sent a renewal letter. I know it's my responsibility, but I happened to be quite sick on my birthday a few months prior, fever, etc. and this completely escaped me.

So, anyway the cop says we have to impound your bike unless someone with a license can pick it up which I don't have anyone. This was NYC, and cops there don't give you too many breaks. I tell him the whole story how I was sick and how my record was clean, etc. Of course, I am pretty upset at the whole thing.

So, the cop comes back and says he spoke to his commander who happens to ride a Harley, and the commander told him to let me go. So, I am a happy camper again. :cheerleader:

Now, the funny part was that I could not afford being stopped again. And I had to ride through NJ and PA another 100 miles, and then back from the track another 130 miles. So, everyone who saw a 'Busa doing 5 mph under the speed limit was probably wondering why that dude was so slow. :poke:

Pulling over immediately when you know you are busted has worked for me.

One thing I do not do is even mention how fast I was going, I ever admit to knowing what speed I was doing. I usually state I wasn't paying attention to the speedometer, I was concentrating on the road/traffice (which is true), but I have an idea you are going to tell me how fast I was going.

But I don't make any excuses. And be prepared to take the ticket and address the individual with respect.

When I get pulled over, i turn the bike off, and immediate take my helmet off, that way they know you aren't going to run once they get out of their cruiser. Another reason, I use the gloves to cover the radar detector on the dash!

Just remember, if you are speeding you will eventully get a ticket, sometimes they might let you go and other times you will get a citation, but the chances were that you desired the citation, if not at that present time but I'm sure there are other times you broke the law and got away with it.

Regardless, it's good to hear you got off. Be safe and treat each other with respect...
