Yup, back in 1986 I left the old o-ring on after a filter change on my Honda V45. Been there done that and kept the tire afterwards but I was 18 years old and fearless then. Same situation today; I would most likely get a new tire. Go make a video of you doing some good burnouts if you really want to keep the tire.

The same thing happened to me the first time I changed my oil but it happened in the garage not on the road. Glad you are okay.

just like normal when you are stripping the girl to get her properly lubed up...you want to make sure the ring is OFF!

had the factory installed ones stick on both the busa and my 2000 durango. every thing else they come off with the filter. I guess they didn't oil the gasket prior to install and it stuck to the housing:banghead:

Glad it came out ok.Could have been alot worse.I have done that before on my truck.Oil all over driveway. Now I double check everytime. Have to ask but what it the hose clamp on your filter for.

I'll tell you this, it'll only ever happen once to you!

I did the same with my car and spilled oil all over my garage floor.

Why do you have a clamp around the filter?

The clamp is to wire tie the filter. I lost a drain plug once from under torquing the drain bolt on my R1. I immediately drilled a hole through the drain plug bolt and wire tied it to a hose clamp on the filter so that neither good loosen.

I lost the drain plug at the drag strip in the middle of a run. The tire was fine. Give it a wash and be careful for a little while.

The hose clamp is so you can safety wire the oil filter to prevent it from backing off. One end of the wire is run thru the clamp and the other end it tied off to the bar above that is the support for the radiator. The other part of the equation is to purchase a oil drain plug that is drilled so you can safety wire the plug to prevent it from backing out and falling off. It really helps to prevent from over torquing the drain plug also because you use the safety wire from ensuring the plug will not back off instead of over torquing the nut to make sure it does not back off while riding.

yeah, u got lucky. solid riding comprehension. gotta watch those filthy rings. do you know why it stuck to the block and didn't come off with the filter. 2 reasons that walk hand in hand....1) did not lube up seal with oil before install, 2) alot too tight there hercules.
glad ur ok tho. oil spills clean up nicely, people splats don't

That could have been very bad indeed.

Always wipe the block of any engine before installing a new filter. Saw this happen in the 70's at a repair shop. Luckily I was a spectator. I made a mental note in the " Don't do that" portion my brain. Wiping the block clean where the filter makes contact is oil changing 101.
Cleaning up massive amounts of oil from your garage floor is in the "how not to change oil at home" manual 101

Got say you did a heck of a job riding through that goat roping.
How did you remove the vinyl seat cover from your arse?

this seems to be a fairly common oversight - see previous post - seems like a very dangerous oversight and maybe should be pinned.

I'd say it's pretty common from hearing all the stories. I spoke with some friends at the local bike shop today and they told me their mechanic actually left a ring on a customers bike and it dumped all his oil.

That fella came back soaked from head to toe in oil and raving mad~!~

.

Why do you have a clamp around the filter?

I know others have answered this, but yes...it's to hog tie the filter. Everything on my bike usually gets wire tied, especially when a meet is coming up~!~

Thanks for everyone's thoughts~!~
