Score one for the good guys! This is exactly why more folks should legally carry a concealed weapon! I shop at this store semi-regularly. You just never know when some freak will go off. There is just not enough LEOs to protect everyone. After you read the story, just think what the outcome would have been, as far as additional injured, if this permit holder was not there. After recent events in the news, this is the preferred method and outcome!!

Man buys knife, stabs 2 at Salt Lake City store | ksl.com

SALT LAKE CITY — A man stabbed two people at the Smith's Marketplace grocery store in downtown Salt Lake City before being subdued by a bystander.

The attack took place around 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the store at 455 S. 500 East.

According to a witness, it appears one man was stabbed in the side of the head and another was stabbed in the stomach. The exact condition of the victims is unknown, but police believe the injuries are very serious and possibly critical.

Police say a bystander with a concealed carry permit witnessed the attack and stepped in to keep it from escalating.

"(The bystander) was suspicious of what might be going on, and when he saw the stabbing, he just drew his pistol and challenged the individual," which caused the alleged attacker to lie down on the ground, said Salt Lake City Police Lt. Brian Purvis.

By the time police officers arrived on the scene, the man was subdued and is now in custody.

The attacker apparently bought the knife inside the store. Police are going over surveillance videos to determine what else the man may have done before the attack.

Police have not yet interviewed the man in custody, who they say is in his 30s, and have been unable to speak to the victims while they are being treated for their injuries.

Police say there is no apparent motive for the attack at this time.

"Just going on what the witnesses said, it appears to be random," Purvis said.

Both victims are being treated at the hospital. Their identities have not been released, but police say they were both males, one in his 40s and one in his 30s.

"This was a really volatile situation that could have gotten even worse," Purvis said. "(The bystander) was definitely in the right place at the right time."

Here's an update.....Stabbing suspect has long criminal history, what a surprise.......

Stabbing suspect has long criminal history | ksl.com

SALT LAKE CITY — A man accused of stabbing people at random at a downtown Smith's Marketplace Thursday has a long criminal history.

Kiet Thanh Ly, 34, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted murder and aggravated assault. Two victims remained in very critical but stable condition Friday at a local hospital, according to Salt Lake police.

But investigators said Friday they still don't know what caused Ly — a South Vietnamese national — to "snap" Thursday afternoon.

Just before 5:30 p.m., police say Ly purchased a knife at Smith's Marketplace, 455 S. 500 East. He then walked into the parking lot and stabbed a 30-year-old man several times in the abdomen, according to a police report. He then allegedly attempted to stab several other people who were able to get away.

A second victim, a 45-year-old man, was cut several times on his arm and received a stab would to his head, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Brian Purvis.

That's when a 47-year-old man, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, took action.

"(The bystander) was suspicious of what might be going on, and when he saw the stabbing, he just drew his pistol and challenged the individual," Purvis said.

Ly was held on the ground until police arrived.

Friday, police released a statement from the concealed weapons holder who told them he wished to remain anonymous.

"I was in the right place at the right time and I did what I had to do," he told police.

Utah court records show Ly has had many run-ins with police dating back to 1997, and his behavior seemed to be more erratic and violent in recent years.

On Monday, he was convicted of joyriding and possessing another person's identification. He is scheduled to be sentenced on those charges in June. He was also convicted in March of misdemeanor theft and placed on probation.

Ly was charged in March in a separate case with sexual battery and two counts of lewdness stemming from incidents that allegedly occurred while he was a patient at St. Mark's Hospital, according to court records. On April 16, Ly submitted a letter to Judge Judith Atherton without advising his own attorneys about it. In the letter, Ly questions why actions he's charged with committing were such a big deal. That case was still pending as of Friday.

In 2011, Ly was convicted on an amended charge of attempted assault on a police officer. In that incident, Ly refused to leave an acquaintance's house, claiming he was homeless, according to court records. When police arrived, Ly took a stance as if he was going to throw punches, charging documents state. He then damaged a police car while being transported to jail.

Also in 2011, Ly was convicted on an amended charge of attempted aggravated assault for threatening a Department of Workforce Services employee with a knife, according to court records.

i proudly carry and will protect me and mine

Good for you.....

This story is exactly why I legally carry a concealed weapon. You just never know! I've heard the straw-man-argument about being paranoid or perhaps we CCW folks are hanging out in the wrong areas. This happened at a major grocery chain downtown, a "super center" type, Smith's. Very busy place. People can be, and are, victims of random acts of violence.

he should have shot him dead! someone with a knife will ruin ur day and likely ur life just as easy as a gun will and terribly painful fashion...

within 21 feet that knife is as deadly as a gun and would be treated as one. which is why deadly force is authorized within 21 feet cause if u shoot someone with a knife charging at you you may not stop (kill) them and it will give them time to slice you up and possibly disarm you.

this imo this is where the citizen with a CCWP gets in over his head.

you have a crazed azzhole cutting people up and you pull ur gun out to make him lay on the ground???? if the guy was pulling the trigger and shooting people it would behoove you to immediately pull out ur weapon and shoot him. you would not even want him to know you are there and armed. you would not say "Police stop". well, maybe someone would but that would be incredibly stupid!

when someone is using deadly force against someone else you should be using it against him immediately to stop the assault. if your gonna bring a gun to a knife fight you better be ready to use it or dont carry it at all.

The guy probably used his best judgement at the time this was occurring. He may very well have been ready to use deadly force and we don't know exactly what he was prepared to do. I can only assume he was prepared to fire if necessary. I applaud him for taking a stand and stopping the assault, regardless of the tactic used.

ive had my cpl for a while, here ccw is the charge you get for carrying concealed without a permit but here we call it a cpl: which stands for concealed pistol license... Flint michigan is one of the most violent cities in the U.S. and thats just based off of murders let alone all the other violent crimes that happen here. Ive been all over chicago ny la compton miami dallas detroit indianapolis and honestly none of them compare to here. That is why i carry, not because im a gun nut but because i protect myself and i refuse to be a victim. I shoot more than most cops do last year i shot around 30k rounds and the year before i shot over 60k. Yes alot of those rounds were .22 rounds but they were in training situations practicing draw and fire technique, how to fire from the hip etc. I also shoot large rounds with all of our pistols especially the 3 guns that i carry which are my ruger LCP .380 my ruger sr9c 9mm and my kimber pro cdp II 45. Ive had cops tell me that my shooting habbits are over kill but one of those officers later was shot in a confrontation and had fired 5 shots and all missed their target. So are we crazy for carrying and shooting regularly.. HELLL NO!!!!!!!!
