Home property taxes went up? I don't think so!

I own 2 homes now, one at my previous duty location, and the one I live in now at my new duty location. I am currently renting the first home out and am happy with that situation.

On Friday, I received a new property assessment form for the first home and it stated the fair market value went up $60,000 for the year of 2011. This did not sit well with me at all because I knew it was dead wrong and full of BS. I sent in an appeal as it is my right do so, and I won in a matter of speaking. I stated on the appeal the definition for fair market value and that there is no way some one would pay the indicated value of the home for the property. I also stated a few other things, but was respectful and stuck to the facts.

The office called me today to inform me there was not a raise in the value and the additional $60,000 would be removed immediately and that it was an error on their part. He indicated that a handful of people in the county were wrongfully assessed and he was glad I caught it.

I assured him I would be fine with the new and correct assessment after he told me what it should be. So, I am cancelling my appeal and saving quite a bit of money that I would have had to pay due to an error.

So, if you feel your property taxes value hike is wrong, appeal it, you may be in the right.

I appealed mine this year after watching several homes sell in my neigborhood for huge discounts below their appraised value. The county didn't bite and would not agree with my argument that the Appraisal is a estimated guess, but the only TRUE value is what a home SELLS for - and I did mounds of research, photos and slide presentation. I have the option to appeal to the state, but that will require a new Appraisal for which I will have to pay for.

the value of my house went down and my property taxes still went up :banghead:

Did you appeal, or do you not have the option in IL?

we do have that option but it wouldn't do any good, they raised everyone's taxes...we lost almost 17% of the town's population (36,000 to 30,000) between the 2000 and 2010 census so they think raising taxes on those of us that are left will make up for the revenue shortage...we are hemorrhaging jobs to other local towns and the casino is going down the drain since IL passed the anti-smoking law and customers can just go across the MS River to other boats in MO where they can smoke

I feel your frustration man, and hope things change for the better soon because there is a snapping point, and it is approaching quickly.

I felt like I wanted to drive down there and burn down the tax office when I got the assessment in the mail. I felt like the local government had put their big greasy, dirty hands into my pocket and took the few spare dollars I do have to pay for their mistakes. Luck was on my side this time though and I am thankful for it.

i appeal mine every year.win every year taxes go up every year.in nassau county on long island we have the highest taxes in the country.fun fun fun

We appealed ours 2 years ago and won. The next year our taxes stayed the same and this year they went down.

I had to protest mine this year also. Got hit with the maximum increase allowed by law. If anything property values have decreased in my area.
