Gen II GP Shift???

Can you switch to GP Shift on the Gen II? I cant seem to get the shifter passed the kick stand switch when its flipped upside down. I didnt have this problem on the Gen I.

What would be the benefit of going to a GP style shift setup?

Could you possible get a new threaded rod and have it bent to clear the switch? A pic of the clearance would help. I have a Gen 1 but OSF rearsets so it was no problem, but didn't care for it anyway.
