Gear Shifter Problems

I recently purchased some riding boots and had to adjust the shifter higher so my size 14s would fit underneath. Occasionally it wont down shift after adjustment. Was I supposed to adjust the rod also? Thanks in advanced for any helpful info

the rod is where you are supposed to adjust it. if you pulled it off and moved some teeth i would put it back and adjust it at the rod by loosening the nuts on either end and turning the rod to move it up. my .02

loosen the jam nut and adjust for your "sweet spot"
