So you boys in Indiana take your forks to a transmission shop for overhaul, eh?

But that somehow doesn't surprise me. The last time I was traveling through Indiana a saw a sign along the highway in front of a two bay garage with "Lawn Mower Repair & Income Tax Service"! I was thinking, sometime in the past, some man says to the owner, "You know, you did a hell-of-a-job on that lawn mower, I think I'll have you do my taxes"! ???

Just so you know, all oils are affected by heat and all oils break down. Even Indiana transmission fluid! :poke:

now wait just a minute here...

I resemble that Indiana thing... but ATF?

whew, I suppose it could work but why? I bet you could just drill a hole in the bottom of the fork tubes and drain the old stuff and then drill a hole in the top to add the new stuff huh?

btw you saw my forks apart at bash and the oil that went back in... eeegads man...

is 5w what the repair manual recommends? I'm gonna be doin it hopefully this saturday so I wanna be dead sure asap so I can track down the right stuff. Guy helpin me said he used Belray when he did the tubes on his '02 Goldwing & he used 20w

The manual says to use "Suzuki Fork Oil L01" 99000-99044-L01
There is no viscosity for this stuff stated.
My dealer uses 2.5w to 5w (sometimes mixes both 1/2 to 1/2 to make 3.75w) and nothing heavier.
Bel Ray says 5W and that is what I went with and it works great.
If you use too heavy of oil, then it will blow the seals easier.

Good Luck!

i'll call around & see who's got some seals and some Belray 5w then. seen on ebay some have the seals and dust shields packaged together, should i get dust shields too?

I used these guys for seals and wipers.
All Balls Products
Yes you should replace both.
Their seals have a triple lip patented design that is like 2 seals at once.
No leaks yet - I'm still testing them.
Great so far.

Stock fluid is 5w. All the forks in the GSXR family including the busa has very weak rebound. Crank the rebound all the way in and it's still not enough. The cheap remedy to this function without replacing the valving is to increase the viscosity of the fork oil. Most guys I know including our trackside suspension guru replaces stock forks with 10w.

Personally, I use a combination of 10w & 5w to end up at around 8.5w. Gives the forks a little more rebound damping.

IMO you can use any variance between 5w & 10w and you'll be just fine. More importantly, use a good antifoaming oil. Motorex is my oil of choice.

Oh, unless it's Mike1180 and then it's 90w gear lube full to the brim! :poke:

Just couldn't pass that one up Mikey!

Naw, no resent... met enough hicks from the flyover country that nothing would surprise me anymore.. The left coast may be full of wacko's but the midwest? ... never mind.. gotta go hide my animals...

One of the properties of ATF fluid is that it expands under heat. That's why they tell you to check your trans fluid in park "while hot". Level changes . I don't know how much heat is intorduced into the fork oil from the compression and rebounding strokes but if it is significant the fluid will expand. What the resulting action would cause... well  someone a lot smarter than me will define. I like mixing good quality fork oil to give the right viscosity like the post above said. Just my 1 and 1/2 cents worth. Wardie

i'm gonna combine 10w & 5w i think, usin Belray fork oil..... what kinda ratio should i use of 10w to 5w?
