FWIW, me and several of my friends have switched over to the Garmin i5 StreetPilot.
It has a very small footprint and the screen has great resolution because it is not touch-screen. It uses a clickwheel like my blackberry so I was instantly comfortable with it.
The i5 runs on 12V or 2 AA batteries. Batteries last around 6 hours. It goes into night mode automatically when it's dark out and has a pretty loud speaker for voice directions.
It's not waterproof but it's very durable. The nicest thing is that all of North America is built-in and it can be expanded with mniSD cards.
The mount is really neat. It's a ball-socket joint. So far very secure and can be adjusted easily.
The best feature is that it has nearly every restaurant and store already in it. I tell it I want chinese for lunch, it finds them and tells me how far away they are. Oh I like that.
Bought my wife the Garmin Streetpilot c330 for christmas. It is awesome! Portable gps, preloaded maps, touch screen display, voice prompts and vivid graphics. She loves it! $499 at best buy, but cought it on sale for $399. She told me it was the best gift she ever received, but I have created a monster. She can now find every quilt store in North America!
