Uh-oh!!! - Maybe I won't take that internal flight to Beijing - I wonder how long it will take to walk from Shanghai!?!?!?

For anybody who is not familiar with a jet engine, a jet fan blade should be perfectly smooth. You might want to think twice the next time you fly on a Chinese Airline. A pilot for a Chinese carrier requested permission and landed at FRA (Frankfurt, Germany) for an unscheduled refueling stop. The reason became soon apparent to the ground crew: The Number 3 engine had been shutdown previously because of excessive vibration, and because it didn't look too good. It had apparently been no problem for the tough guys back in China: as they took some sturdy straps and wrapped them
around two of the fan blades and the structures behind, thus stopping any unwanted windmilling (engine spinning by itself due to airflow passing thru the blades during flight) and associated uncomfortable vibration caused by the suboptimal fan.

Note that the straps are seatbelts....how resourceful! After making the "repairs", off they went into the wild blue yonder with another revenue-making flight on only three engines! With the increased fuel consumption, they got a bit low on fuel, and just set it down at the
closest airport (FRA) for a quick refill.
That's when the problems started:
The Germans, who are kind of picky about this stuff, inspected the malfunctioning engine and immediately grounded the aircraft. (Besides the seatbelts, notice the appalling condition of the fan blades.) The airline operator had to send a chunk of money to get the first engine replaced (took about 10 days).
The repair contractor decided to do some impromptu inspection work on the other engines, none of which looked all that great either. The result: a total of 3 engines were eventually changed on this plane
before it was permitted to fly again.

soooo....lets send all our work to them since they obviously have the corner on cheap and good products

the allmighty dollar at work again, here as usual it takes precedence over human life.

i'm at a loss for words... i cant tell you how bad that fan is on that engine... coming from an aircraft maintenance background... just amazing!

That, ladies and gentlemen, is what communism will do for your society. Substandard government regulation that will put lives in danger has been a longstanding tradition in the former Soviet Union and in China.

People are just another expendable resource. Who cares if they die due to something that could have been prevented?

In communist societies a person is no more valuable then a piece of dirt.

P.S. And don’t give me any of that utopian society crap where everyone is equal. The only way people are equal in communist societies is because they are all equally expendable.

All animals are equal but some are more equal than others

Wow.
Another aircraft maintainer here, that is truly disturbing. If any of our birds looked like that our entire squadron would be fired and possibly in the brig. Looks like either multiple bird strikes to the blades or he flew through about a 4 hour sandstorm at full speed?

Looks like an Airframer from our command got a hold of it lol

Just kidding, we do a dam good job on our HS-60S

(Charlesbusa @ Nov. 10 2006,10:00) Where did you get the story from?

Can you paste a link for us?
+1000...I got family flying over to China soon.

PM sent to deldeway.

Saw stuff like this all the time in Africa. Infact, Ghana Airlines (DC-9) flew its scheduled route (5 stops) up the west coast with it's wheels down because they couldn't retract them. Their solution, just fly with the wheels down

Kinda looks to me like maybe some hail damage?!

Not the type of kerosene burner I would want to be strapped into.

crew chief here.  Man that's crazy.  I'm on C130's.  A shelled turbine doesn't look that bad LOL
