Brake pad change: Does the caliper come off?

I was reading through the first gen service manual. On page 6-64 it seems to allude that a pad change can be done wih the caliper on the rotor. is this right? On other bikes, ive taken them off.

Yes, you can change the pads without removing the calipers.

Just slip it off. It's too easy. It slides right past the wheel. If you are worried you will tag the wheel, green tape it.
