Yeah, here they have (require you to use) the little 250 cruiser class bikes for the beginner course. But the advanced rider course requires you to use your own bike.

Just to clarify......your wife is taking the ADVANCED MSF course right?

So umm yeah, she went home, cleaned the steed up, patted it on the gas tank, said "good girl" and put a blanket on it....

....i can't even be mad right now lol

I'm pretty sure the bike thought in her mind 'bad girl' as your wife patted her. :D

Sorry, I'm not too familiar with the US system. BRC means beginner riding course? Does that mean your wife has experience riding but doesn't have a licence yet? What is the ERC and what is the sportbike riders course?

BRC is beginners riding course. the military required her to take it regardless of her experience. he has been riding scooters as a kid and her last bike was a katana 600.

ERC is Experienced Riders course and the sportbike riders course is a course specific to sportbikes.

For a Marine on a sportbike, all 3 courses must be done.

Sorry about the damage. That is a lesson learned by itself. It seems the instructor is a **** since you said he just watched it happen. Things can get fixed, your wife is learning.

no the class doesnt have their own bikes.

and yes it is big. But it is what I used for all my classes. the weight is the sole reason it fell. but thats all I have. she wanted to start taking the bike to work and in order to do that, she HAS to take the class. We looked around for someone to let her use their "beater" but to no avail. She said that she caught it before it dropped but didnt have the strength to pick it back up. I need to rethink (and so does she) about what bike she wants...

I dropped mine in the garage--5 days after delivery, brand freakin' new. Most grown men don't have the strength to stop one of these bikes from going down once they've really gotten started. At a point, you just kind of have to ease her down and hope for the best.

The shop where I bought mine told me that lots of folks have ridden biikes out of the shop, brand new, only to drop them within the first few days. Simply not used to the new bike, and it sneaks up on them. Don't think it has anything to do with which bike someone should ride, because there's a point (tipping point--hahahaa--bad pun!) at which you're just not gonna save it from meeting the ground.

Probably just watched due to liability issues... if he'd tried to step in and was unsuccessful, coulda been sued (considering how ridiculuously litigious some members of society are these days...)

The sportbike course must be a military only thing. Checked the MSF site, and it isn't offered to the general populace. Got the BRC, ERC, and the "Scooterschool".

Its one of them facts of life type deals, learned that a long time ago with nice street cars, they are gonna get rock chips, scratches etc, but its a street car and not a trailer queen. Doesn't look to bad and atleast she didnt tear herself up trying to save it, sometimes ya just gotta know when to "let em go"

I agree 100%, dropped mine in parking lot about 2 months after purchase. I turned into a parking space and accidentally locked-up the front brake while the front wheel was still turned to the right. I was able to ease the fall of the bike, but in no way could support the weight once past that "critical angle". I had two men help me pick up the bike, thanked them, then drove away quite embarrassed.

Re: Wif dropped the Busa @ MSF course

These things are heavy !! The first time I had my wife on the back I was swinging into a parking space, and she sat up, and let go of my waist just as I was whipping it in, and coming to a stop. It started to tip, and I couldn't catch it, it just went down REALLLL SLOOOOW ! Now that's the first thing I tell someone, DON'T LET GO & SIT UP, TILL I'M STOPPED.

I've already done the MSF class, but if I was to take any of my bikes there, then I think the side fairings at least would be coming off first.Sorry man.

+1. It's a SAFETY class. Have you ever tried to save someone else's bike from tipping over? It's a good way to have both rider and instructor injured, especially a heavy bike like that. Don't know exact circumstances but it's never wise to step into a rider's path of travel, regardless of their speed or vertical orientation. What if she dumped the clutch at high rpms or something? Weird how they don't use the little bikes for a BRC though. I would assume it was an ERC from the simple fact she was riding a HAYABUSA. Not the best bike for the exercises in the BRC, but the key is no one was hurt. Whenever I get through a class with no injuries, that's a good class, regardless of what happens to the bikes or if everyone passes or not.

I'm guessing ya'll was determined get her going on 2-wheels no matter what. There's no way she (or any women that I've been privileged to) is gonna be able to stop a Busa once its going down. At that point, it has very little to do with skill or experience, which is why I applaud you both on reconsidering bike size for her. You say, "the weight is the sole reason it fell" like that's not one (engine torque mainly being the other) of main, obvious reasons we don't see a ton of women rolling around on Busas. It probably has nothing to do with her will, confidence, or ability to ride. If anything (IMO), the "course-environment" is probably the worst place for a person for a bike that is too heavy for them because of all of the slow speed manuevers, tons of time flatfooted/duckwalking, etc.
There's a group of girls in my area that stunt and ride, and none have any desire to go larger than a 675 (one rides a Triumph), so I'm curious as to why her mindframe is to want such a large bike.
As for the instructor, was he standing right next to her or something when it happened? In all of the class formats that I've ever seen, the instructor's not really readily available to just help someone catch a bike that was falling. I'm in no way an instructor though, so I have no idea what their protocol is. What section were they on when it happened? Since he was the first one there to help her get it up, I'd say he must have been relatively attentive.

I'm not flamin ya bro...just going on for anyone else who might be trying to get their girl involved and readin the thread. I'm looking at getting a 250 (Ninja unfortunately) for my girl. I don't see the need for anything else larger or nicer as starter. People are always looking to start up riding @ lowest point, so they easily resell/trade when she's ready to upgrade.

Oh yeah, the ONE time I that gracefully laid her down on her side in my garage...freaked out and heaved her back upright, my hammies were on FIRE for the next couple days. Be ready to give out a couple massages once the adrenaline from the moment, embarrassment, and realization that you're not gonna wig out subsides. She's gonna be sore even if it didn't land on her.

I'll give her a big hug next time I see her.

Tell her not to worry about it too much. It's all fixable.

Peace, bro...see you after the Stampede.
