Obviously I think the size of the animal plays a part in the decision making.  Per the statment above, I would always try to avoid a deer at any cost............but as those are not usually family pets, it doesn't much apply to this thread.  Now are we talking chihuaha's here are are we talking Bull Mastiffs.  I don't even like smacking a bird with the car or that possum that came from nowhere, it even gives me the creepies to run something over that's already been run over...........But I always try to not run over anything and would make every attemp short of laying the bike down to avoid such a collision.

So.........Yes to both.

The poll said cat, so the cat would have to go... Now if it were my dog then I would have to think about it.... Beside hitting a large animal like oa dog culd definately cause you to wreck also so that is a lose lose situation. But the cat is history... and I like cats

(KROOZER @ Jul. 29 2007,06:26) I hate cats. But I did have a dog. A stray cat, run it over. A family cat (like U specified), I would bite the bullet and do all I can to not hit it. Therefore, I voted to save the cat.
See this is the sticking point. It's the family cat. I would never swerve my car or my bike to avoid a small animal in the road or about to enter the road. To many people have died or been seriously injured doing just that. But the family cat? I am afraid I would take the pain rather than be remembered (and reminded at every family get together) as the guy that killed little Fluffy. Sad but true. crazy.gif

I like pets because they become an extension of the family; however wrecking an expensive bike to save any animal doesn't seem like a rational thing to do especially when it would put the rider at risk of serious injury or death. We all know what we are supposed to do when meeting obstacles on road especially at this stage of bike riding when we are supposed to be on top of the riding game. A Hayabusa is a graduation present that we get to ride from years of riding lower horsepower bikes. Make an objective choice when dealing with your fate. Right guys!

We have cats. I agree with above, and remember we're talking a tip-over, not an impact with another object. Money will repair the bike, but can't replace a beloved fur family member.

If it's a matter of my life or the cat, Fluffy is toast every time. I'll be glad to cry at the funeral and remember her fondly, but it'll be ME remembering, not her thinking while she licks her backside, "Geez, I wonder what happened to that guy who feeds me and throws out my poop?".

For those of you that are talking about your own family pet, I understand. It would be like hitting your own child.

Many people have died, been seriously injured or have hurt others trying to swerve to avoid an animal. I will tell you from a perspective of a traffic homicide investigator with over 350 fatal crash investigations. Hit the animal. I teach this in safety classes and if asked. Even slow speeds can turn bad when trying to swerve. The fact is most times when you try and swerve the animal will make a counter move. The natural instinct for you will be to try and move again.

Another thing about this question, is if you didnt see the animal in enough time prior to having to make the hit dont hit decision, it is probably so close that any move you make is gonna be so sudden its gonna be bad.
Those who say lay it down, have you ever laid a bike down before? That shyt hurts when your sitting still?
I am not gonna miss work, or face possible life long disability because I tried to miss an animal.

My safety is first and most important  beerchug.gif if I can avoid the cat, then I will. You might kill yourself trying to avoid a small animal that could get out of your way rock.gif

Maintain your course and try to stop...if you swerve then the animal has less of a chance to avoid YOU. If it is a large animal (deer), then you have to avoid hitting it because of
the greater risk of injury or death to you.

I hate cats. What do you think would have happened? firedevil.gif

I would have hit the brakes to give the animal a chance, but if it's him or me, he is gonna get the worst of it.

Well we're talking about a cat not a dog. Cats are everywhere, go to a barn in the country adn you'll find 20 little kittens. I say kill the cat and save the hundreds $ for replaced plastics. guns.gif ---------------meow
