The scenario described in the above thread is absolutely typical for any shelter. In addition, the money/profit priority is true of any industry that relies on animals as a resource including most well known pet food makers, factory farming, fur and leather industry, etc. The list is massive and in each industry animals are treated to a hellish existence only to meet a painful death preceded by terror and confusion.

As absolutely tragic and sad as this reality is, it is made even more so when you consider that for EVERYTHING we do that causes harm/pain/suffering to animals (of any kind) there is a cruelty free alternative.

Every person, through nothing more than their own daily personal choices, can reduce the pain and suffering of animals.

Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble
This site reviews pet food analytically in terms of the quality, source and benefits of ingredients used to make the food. Save a pet...don't feed it major label food. The lionshare of well know brands such as Purina, IAMS, Science Diet, etc., all use ingredients that are not "human grade". The pet food industry was evolved, to some degree, to provide human food agriculture businesses with a profitable disposal system for the food that was unfit for human consumption. In addition, those pets that are put down in shelters and vet clinics, often wind up in a meat grinder to be added to common pet foods, along with cancerous bodies and even the collars often aren't removed before "rendering" these animals into "food" for your beloved pets.

Often seen as extreme, crazy or over-zealous, you'll understand why if you learn the issues. Ever seen a "fur animal" skinned after a "worker" steps on it's neck and tugs on it's body to kill it, so as to preserve the integrity of the fur? And then seen the same animal lying forlornly on the ground a few minutes later...with NO SKIN and still alive b/c the neck breaking didn't work and nobody could be bothered to finish the job since the animal was still enough to profit from in the skinning!!!! >:(

Ironically, much better accepted even though their agenda very closely aligns with PETA. They're well known for their work in terms of domestic pet rescues and care, but they are right on board with working against factory farming, fur industry, lab testing on animals, etc. They're looking out for our pets for sure but they're just as much champions for non-pets caught in the human pain machine.

Farm Sanctuary | Watkins Glen, NY
Dedicated in particular to championing animals and animal welfare issues related to the Matrix-like evil that is Factory Farming, which inflicts a hellish existence and a painful death on over 1B animals every year, Farm Sanctuary has done great work in educating the public on these issues, bringing about legislative change in the treatment of farm animals and rescuing animals in particular need whenever possible, often relocating them to one of their two sanctuary farms where animals essentially win the lottery and are able to live out their lives naturally in a caring environment.

Compassion Over Killing
Caring Over Compassion. Don't the let the unfortunate acronymn fool ya. These folks are serious and have done tremendous work in the area of public education in terms farm animal welfare, meat free/animal product free foods, working with municipalities to encourage meat free eating and even helping a local congressman learn about the benefits of vegetarianism and veganism.

A lot of us, thanks to an industry that uses marketing to great effect, seem to feel that farm animals are living happy lives with just one bad day that painlessly ends their existence. NOTHING could be further from the truth. Virtually all of the animal foods found in a typical grocery store are the result of factory farming and factory farming inflicts pain, suffering and terror on animals that are just as capable as feeling pain, suffering and terror as our own pets and children. These animals are NOT happy to be our next meal, they DO want to live and they DO develop relationships with each other and they DO play and SLEEP and have intelligence and an understanding just like dogs and cats do.

Without getting preachy and condemning (that is not my intent), if you care for animals at all, you owe it to yourself and to them to learn the truth about how they are treated in the industries that we support (or choose not to support) every day. And when you learn of what these animals suffer, realize that they feel in their torment, in all likelihood, just as your pet or child would. Then consider your role in all of this and ask yourself: "Would I do this to my pet/child?" If not, then ask "Why would I have it done to another animal?"

With peace and respect,

I'm with you 100%, even though some think so, we are not here to dominate and torture all life forms. I will not become a vegetarian but will always respect all life. Raydog
