I read an article today about the proper way and location to lube a chain and wanted to see how many different methods were being used. If you use on that I haven't listed, please describe it for us.

Don,
I hit my chain at the top of the sprocket, then after I have done the lube, I wait a few minutes and spin the wheel holding a towel at the sides of the chain forward of the sprocket (so that I don't get the towel caught up into anything).

At the bottom on the chain (just off the sprocket),,, I spray the lube on the inside of the chain. This way the lube has to penetrate the chain and travel through the it in order to get flung out and onto my undertail. I lube my chain every 150 miles or so and never have a problem with lube crud getting on my under tail.

While the chain is hot just after a nice ride I put the bike up on the Pitbull, place bike in first gear with high idle on, hold a towel under the chain and spray lube, let it run for a few seconds and done. No wiping off chain and the chain looks clean all the time.

I voted...
At the top on the chain (just off the sprocket)

But I was wondering how would you lube "At the bottom of the sprocket", I could see "At the bottom on the chain (just off the sprocket)" but at the bottom of the sprocket it would just fall to the ground. Sorry I can't visualize that one. I tend to over think theses kinda things.

i'm not sure which one to vote for... i pull the chain guard off and spray the top of the chain (faces the undertail ) as it gets to the sprocket all while spinning the tire with my left hand...

Actually spray the lube on the sprocket right at the edge of the chain, if you use this method you have to do both sides.

I kind of use diagram on Maximum Wax can...
Inside bottom in front of sprocket trying to get both sides of rollers by links.
"Outside" top on sprocket.
I start at master link and rotate tire around once for each location, then I wipe off any excess, and let it sit to "cure". I probably use too much, but it doesn't fly off. I lube every 300 if clean, and clean/lube every 600.

I clean and dry using WD-40.
Take it for a 5 mile cruise, come back and apply Maxium Chain wax.
Since I sport a center stand.
I apply wax to the inside of the chain at 7 O'clock and outside at 2 O'clock on the sprocket.
Wipe off excess.
Let it sit a bit and then off for a day or two of riding.

I ride for about 1 mile (to get the chain warm) , then spray chain wax on the bottom chain (top of the chain) so when it turns, the wax lubs the sprockets and chain rollers. And because it's on the inside of the chain, and not the outside there is no mess on the outside where it doesn't matter anyway and doesn't throw wax or lube all over me or the bike while I ride wink.gif

Same, except spools, no ctr stand & I use Kero which is more or less the same stuff just not as refined. After it sets-up I wipe down the outer plates just to make it look pretty.

I'm trying that next time. Thanks for the tip.

Hot chain, back of sprocket...overnight soak. Motul. Supposed to be inside the chain, but I end up getting the stuff on my rear wheel when I try.

I read an article today about the proper way and location to lube a chain ....
Ok, so I lube it on the top side of the bottom run, just before the back sprocket, after the chain's warmed up.

But what's the "correct" method according to the article, and who wrote the article?

Here is the link that I found the information. I am not saying they are correct. I am just reporting what I read.

Go down on the page and it talks about all kinds of things, including the best way they recommend lubing a chain.

I lube the lower half of the chain on the top surface.

This being the inside surface of the chain as it wraps around the sprokets.

Didn't know which one to vote for.

Lube a chain? You mean you're suppose to lube it every once in a while?
