I know some of you have your own web page. I want to do that for a group of kids. (High School/College age)
Need info on how to go about it.
Need to be able to post pix, post stories, etc by myself and visitors, links to web sites.
Want membership/password style site.

Anyone have any advise?

Thanks..........gary

Give a person a fish and you feed him for a day; teach that person to use the internet and they won't bother you for weeks[/QUOTE]

I like that!

guess it all depends on what you know how to do already. there's plenty of sites out there that do hosting, some have unlimited bandwidth which is nice cuz the bill won't change

I'm sure there's enough knowledge round here to help you out

oh yeah, some places will give ya this type of board capability for free ... like I said it all depends on what exactly you are trying to accomplish

I did find a site that gives unlimited pages, 10GB for traffic, allows links and the ability to post pictures, and mess, it also has 200 templates to design your own page. they charge about $20.00 a month for the service, does that sound right?

Thanks already.

might look at http://www.canaca.com

I've been shopping around for a few some hosting for a few sites I've been working on, so far this place has the best deals that I've found, however there are many other very similar places to use.  Most of these places are offering the best deals for prepayment of the contract term, in this case if you pay for the gold first year in advance, they give you the second year free (promo, dunno when it ends)

The biggest thing you need to watch for is the bandwidth they allow you to use.  Consider that like your cell phone minutes....only every time someone visits your site, they use a small portion of those minutes, multiply that buy # of visits a day/week/month.  If you aren't expecting a ton of traffic like this site gets, you would probably be ok with a "limited" amount vs a site like this would benefit from "unlimited" bandwidth.

The next thing is if you are "hosting" a site with a company, 99% don't care how many pages, links, pics, etc you have up as long as its A) legal and b) not porn.  They just equate all that into your allocated storage space, so if you are looking at a site that says you can only have 50pics, skip them and move to the next place

I've posted some of the stuff that canaca offeres below, some in bold are sorta what I think you are looking for....notice the # of email accounts, bandwidth, disk space and other bolded items.  The invisionboard is basically just like this forum, so you could really do just about anything you wanted.

Anywho, this is just one example, I'm not pushing/advocating this site at all, just posting an example of what you could get for less money/month

If you would like some more places to look at, or have any questions, just let me know.

umm, if you know a little and have a cable/dsl connection, there's no need to pay anyone for a site. What OS do you use?

Thanks guys for the info,
This is a learn as you go proposition for me. My 16 year old daughter knowns more about this than I do.
I do need to get a site up and running soon.
I am a youth paster in the Northern Cali area and work with about 250 High School and College age kids, we also host a week long camp, so many friends and pictures get made and they want a web page to post pictures, stories, topics, etc.
We also hold scheluled events and need a place to announce upcoming items. The kids are from all over N. Cali, so having a Web page would be the tickets for all our needs.

Brian, thanks for all the info I will be looking into the system this week.

Snake, I have XP on my computer. I do have DSL through sbc/yahoo.

if you decide to try and host it on your own PC, unless you have a static IP (doubt it, but you'd know if you do) you might wanna look into something like no-ip. The draw back to doing that is you are limited to whatever bandwidth you have, the uptime reliability of your server and your service and you have to do all the maintenance/patches/etc.

I can help you if you need any help with this stuff, I deal with it every day at work

well u have a stastic IP (DSL). The easiest way would be to use sbc/yahoo free homepage for users. The next easiest (and free) way would be install a local web server on yours. Let me know what ya decide.
