I ordered a 10" over underbraced extended swingarm. I am going to try to install it this weekend. I was wanting to know if there is anywhere I can get a socket to fit the swingarm bolt besides trying to get it from a stealership. Is there any autopart stores that carry them as loaners? I'm actually not sure what it's called. The one that looks like a 4x4 wheel bearing socket. Also, is this something that is a pain in the....to change? Just didn't know if there would be fitment issues or how hard it may be. Looked simple enough from a once over. I have the swingarm itself, extended braided brake line, and a 150 link EK ZVX2 quadra-X ring chain. Will there be any other items I will need? Thanks for any and all replies!!!

It is not a real common deal. smithabusa was selling them. You can make one with a socket and die grinder in a pinch or carefully use a punch, but it is best to buy the tool.

you can get it off ebay. they are like 30 buks. You can just buy the socket at auto store and grind it if your good. Using a punch works fine to get it off but it is hard to tighten to any torque to get it back together.

Just checked ebay. They are $64 + shipping. To me, that's a bit ridiculously priced. I have an battery powered dewalt grinder. Maybe that could do the trick???

Is this job gonna be a pain?

your buying a 10 inch underbraced swingarm....and worrying about a $64.00 tool.

buy the tool, it will be worth in convenience alone.....then sell the tool for $30.00 on ebay.

I took a Craftsman socket and a cut off wheel on a die grinder, and made my own, fits like a glove. Use a 32mm socket.

You can always resell the tool. I'm sure someone here on the board will be happy to buy it. Just deduct a little from what you bought it for as a rental fee per say.

quit lissenin' to all tha rich-azz Daddy-Warbucks out here, get yourself a big 'ole flathead and start bangin!

Seriously-a good punch will knock that castle-nut (what its called) loose once you take a 36mm socket to the other side and get the axle loose on the left side of bike. When you reattach the new arm, clean all the threads well, squirt a bit of loc-tite on spin it on and give it a few good He-man taps.

I aint tellin you to do this because I wana see your arm drop off behind you-I actually CHANGED my swingarm to a 9" extended one two years back and put over 8k miles on it so I really DO know what Im sayin here...not fulla b.s. like I normally am:moon:

*you will also need a extended rear brake caliper arm (to hang caliper bracket) if it didnt come w/one for running rear brake; and I would definitely reccommend gettin aftermarket rear shock/spring combo to offset that enormous stretch, otherwise you will ridin SUPER stiff and the bike wont handle for crap...check with board sponsors (i got an OEM reworked shock/Hyperco SPring combo from GPW @ HPC and it works GREAT!) they may have something in stock that can sort you out-tell'm what kind of ridin you do and Im sure they can whip up something that will keep you happy!*

any questions about your stretch project, gimme a PM I'll try to sort you out:thumbsup:

-ps:i just yanked my 9" arm off becuse somebody bought it, so just went thru removing the arm again-castle nut came off just fine w/the punch again.

Thanks for the reassurance!!! My winter projects have gotten expensive... I had it custom painted and a bunch of odds and ends replaced. I have to listen to the wifey griping. So, yea I get a little aggravated at the thought of buying a $70 socket that I may only use a few times!!! :banghead:

Big D, when you reinstalled the new swingarm, what was the easiest way to get it bolted back on to the shock? Did you take the shock assembly loose at the top shock mount, bolt the shock to the swingarm at the bottom where the dog bones are, then bolt the top of the shock assembly back? I was trying to put the swing arm and dogbones back together by standing on the swingarm to put pressure to get the bolt back on the bottom of the shock assembly. Where it was underbraced, it was pressing the shock against the swingarm and bent then snapped the shock under that much pressure. Didn't pay much attention because the stocker wasn't hard to get off and had the brace on the top of the arm instead underneath.

I have a used shock off an 02(I think) I'll sell ya for $30 plus shipping. Been sitting on my bench for 2 years unused. Got it with a stock arm I bought and still haven't done anything with the arm either.
