Smoke on start up

Hello all. Lately I have noticed a puff of blue smoke on start up. Also seems like the bike has consumed about 1/2 qt of oil over the last 1000 miles or so. I'm a little worried about the smoke on start up as this is usually indicative of oil leaking down past the valve seals. Weather here has been quite a bit warmer too. Don't know if that would be a factor. Any thoughts ?
2004 model, 5300 miles. Regular oil changes.

It is not over full on oil is it? That can make it smoke...

You know what ? As a matter of fact it was over. I had checked it yesterday when it was cold and it looked low so I added oil, in fact about a quart. I then checked it what I got home and it looked high. So, I drained out some of it and started it then re-checked it again and not it looks fine. I'll look for the smoke in the morning before I head out. I got reading the manual (duh) and it says to start the bike and let it run for 3 min. then check it. This I did not do yesterday. Thanks, mh
