I got an full micron Exhust(used) yeasterday:thumbsup:, I got everything tore down and started putting the headers on. I noticed the headers fit into the block but were not as snug as the stock one???, is there a seal that i need to get for these, or is this normal or a problem? these are in pretty good shape but look like they have sat for sometime I noticed a white rezidue (like you get on you battery) around the top to the headers( i sanded down and it came off) that go into the block:banghead:, what is this? also would you recommend wraping the exhaust? Your help and comments are appriciated.

you can wrap the headers if you want to. it can cause them to become brittle with the wrap. make sure the block still has the exhaust gaskets in it. THat might cause it to be a little loose. but they will snug donw. make sure you bolt the whole exhaust up bu tleave a little loose the go back and snug up all the header bolts and make sure the prings. if any are on there. sorry been a long time since i have done up my exhaust

If you want to wrap them then don't be afraid to wrap them. You can wrap them and ride in all weather conditions and riddnig styles for many years and ten thousands of miles without the headers become brittle or anything else.

Once you've finished the instal and run the bike make sure you go back and check the tightness of the header bolts again.

White residue = rust (oxidation)

That may have come from not having a good seal where the header pipes fit into the head or no exhaust gaskets at all.

These shorties were $19.95 each and $4.00 for clamps. I added a screw to each side just for insurance. Bet they sound and work the same as Lord Humorous's.

Wouldnt it be black? Exhaust gasses are black, so if it wasnt a good seal it would have black soot on it not white.:whistle:

Exhaust gas does not always cause black soot. When I saw the same thing on my 82 CBX the exhaust gaskets were shot. Since the new ones were installed, no more white haze/soot or whatever you want to call it showed up.

Does it lean the A/F mixture out or something of the sort? I've never seen anything like it and the oxidation/rust answer sounded correct to me.

Could the residue be some type of sealer that the previous owner used ? Just a thought.

There is a thread on here that warns against wrapping Titanium.
If your exhaust is Titanium, don't wrap it.

When I done mine I got her all back together and my buddy called and said to get her red hot and then tighten the header bolts again while it is hot. I didn't want to take her back apart so skipped that step. To make a long story short, I ended up doing it anyway, Header Leak. You could hear it when you got on her, especially from a slow roll in a high gear. When it is hot the bolts will turn another 1/4 to a half turn. Just don't strip them out when it is hot. Be very mindful of the amount of pressure you are putting on them. Oh and you will burn your hand a few times even with gloves on.

That's funny... I had my Akra full Ti system wrapped for 6 years. I've ridden in all weather conditions, short rides, long rides, commutting, urban, rural, twisties, racing, two up touring, etc. I've had absolutly no damage associated to the header wrap. Am I just lucky?

I would still like to hear from the person who actualy had a failure of his bike's ti exhaust system and how the wrap caused this. Some threads slip by that I don't read and I must have missed that one.
