Notchiness when turning motor over

So I'm looking into my engine noise, and also installing a manual tensioner (ape), and I've noticed that when I'm turning the motor over, with the plugs out, there is sort of a notchiness and a bit of a notchy sound. I've put my ear up to the motor, and it seems that the sound may be coming from the clutch area. I've already inspected the clutch for loose bits, and none were found. I'm about to pull the clutch cover for another look, but I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same "feel" when turning the motor over under these conditions? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Justin
