I think you should sell a luggage rack and the setup you have, mainly as I would have no need for the back rest, but that’s just me. As for the price I think $100 for the rack and back rest. I think that $75 is a fair price for the luggage rack alone.
Now as far as the patent my understanding is all you would have to do is draw up all the plans and a step by step procedure for the assembly enclose it all in a envelope and mail it to yourself. Once you receive it DO NOT OPEN IT. If someone else starts selling your idea or says you stole their idea you use the postmark on the envelope as the date of your invention. If you decide you would like to patent it at some other date you would use the same thing. It’s kind of just a safety for you.

If I was still with my wife I would have snatched one up, for around $100.00. I think anyone that did a lot of 2-up riding wouldn't mind having one. Even if they didn't their partner would.

This would be GREAT FOR CHILDREN passengers !!

Looks great. $100 seems about right for price, I have no need for one, but if I were in the market....

another idea... look at putting a "hinge" on the luggage rack and make it fold up and dissappear into the backrest... if you need it, then just fold it down to lock in place...

my $.02

oh yea... I'm definitely interested in one

I have thinking of building the same thing. The luggage rack in the photo is also on ebay for $89, but has no back rest. You design is very similar. I want to visit the store in rock hill, sc and pick a bag out to fit what I build for my bike.
You did a great job with yours.

also you might want to give it the option to go one and off with thumb screws like everyone buys for there front seat to get rid of having tools.. overall i could see using this if i was on a road trip with the wife you she would be b*tching about her back...

Wouldn't be illegal for you to sell it, because you made enough changes to it that it is ok to sell it.

It looks like a great idea.It sure will make your passenger more comfortable and feel more safer.Since its able to withstand such a heavy weight and its stable.Able to put luggage too.It would be better of course if you are able to add in more better feature/s.It would be better to market it out in the busa communities too.I dont need one as of now.

I have been thinking about making a back rest just like this! I love it, and I am sure my wife would to....

Can I buy one?? I would prefer just the back rest w/o the rack.......

I have the Renntec rack but went with a Corbin rear seat and backrest. I figure there is engineering involved in the development and I don't have to rely on a garage weld to hold my passenger safely.

Now, the Corbin seat is wider...if only I could get the seat and rack on at the same time...

I got a new luggage rack for mine yesterday and it looks very good on the bike. I am going to build some sort of backrest this week. I used to work in an upholstery shop, so hopefully I can come up something. I talked with a machinist friend about helping me build something using the same idea. I paid about $90 for this rack w/s&h.

I'll post some pics later as they are on the wifes camera.

Ok so I have finally got everything together and I can make them just like mine for $150 if I could get 20 or more people I think I can drop it to about $100.00 In the next few days I will be getting together some better pictures and posting in the group buys section of the org.
1299 as far as the garage weld comment I am in no way the best welder but I have been in welding for 8 years, I trust my welds or I would not put my girlfriend on it. Also, I could probably make a luggage rack that will work with your corbin seat, however, I do not have a corbin seat to test it with. Its expensive and I would not trust someone with mine if I had one, but if you wanted to send it to me I will make you one.
I have not tested this backrest on a Gen2 because Busa's are far and few between here in Tn and a Gen2 is even more rare.

Hey the one from ebay I bought, is very light weight and aluminum, if you need any help on the backrests, let me know. I will send you a pic of what I build for mine. Good luck with it. I still want to design one to suit me

I would think 100-150 if the luggage rack is removable.

What I'd really like to see is a backrest minus grab bar that folds into the storage area under the back seat without unbolting and doesn't inhibit the cowl cover... get sick of of those 4 bolts constantly swapping from cowl cover to back seat when I wanna go 2 up!!

Hey, question for you. I am asking this because your design appears to be well built, well thought out, and something I would put on my bike. A couple of years ago I tried to figure out a way to build a support (that was not butt ugly) a support for keeping soft luggage off of the body work. Seeing your design and your use of the grab rail mounting points.....if you built or included something that goes from the exhaust hangers to the grab rail points, I think you would be on to something that would include many more of us. I just don't ride the Busa with a passenger enough to be worth while, but I do use the luggage on a regular basis. You have the talent to consider building a soft luggage hanger or support that could be removed easily (6 bolts) and support soft luggage and incorporate it into your design. Just an idea. What do you think?

This would be a great idea, but I don't think there is enough room for a backrest to fit under the seat and when it is folded out there is nothing to stop it from flipping all the way back. However I did see a mod where someone cut 2 notches in the hump so it could be put on without having to take off the grab bar. Looked really good, I am just not into cutting my bike.

I will look into this, I really had not thought about it but I did make some different hangers for my dads cruiser. What kind of soft luggage are you talking about?
