so that past few weeks have kinda been a spiral of shid that have taken a mental toll on me. it all started a few weeks ago when my girl and i began struggling with one another that eventually led to us seperating as of yesterday for reasons that i still dont understand.

i have an awesome job that pays well with excellent benefits, however it is very monotonous(sp) and jsut not my thing anymore. i like a challenge, i like going to work and not knowing what ive got ahead of me, i like problem solving..... none of which i can do with my current position of employment.

for the past few years, i have always considered getting into law enforcement and others believe that it is something that i would excell in. the opportunity has now come where a local enforcement agency is looking to hire officers and the civil service test is coming up in a few weeks. i feel like if i dont take the opportunity to take this test then i never will. i guess the only concern i have is that i am afraid i am going to get my hopes high and then not get hired on. im not worried about the physical fitness part of the test, as i am in pretty good shape.... i am jsut worried that since i dont have previous experience that im going to get passed up for somebody that does or has already been through the academy.

im going to be registering to take the test this week, so hopefully things work out and i can make some moves in my life. its time for a change!!!!

i forgot to mention that they pay for the academy, they pay the attendee $22/hr 40hrs/wk while at the academy, base salary out of the academy is $48k starting out, and obviously full paid benefits with retirement.

man I been there. the physical is the easiest part of the whole thing. Its the written and the oral exam that are the hardest. Not having a college degree will hurt too if you dont have one. I went through several processes with city and co. got pretty far ea. time but no go.

Good luck bro and def. dont get your hopes up. A lot of competition

After I retired from the military, thats what i wanted to do. I went through the whole application process and got hired with an academy date in hand. Most PD's need people and if your record is clean and you can pass the physical, psych test, and lie detector test ( that one was a biotch) etc... you'll be fine. Just don't quit the first time you get turned down, apply everywhere to get your foot in the door. I was turned down 3 times before getting hired, eventually I got 2 job offers and picked the one I wanted most. Also don't quit your job then start applying, its a long drawn out process and you will need cash flow during it. It can take up to a year or more in many cases. You really have to want it because it does get frustrating, and if you make it through the whole process, you've earned it. After I got hired, I ended up taking a different job with the DOD for better pay, but I will always wonder what it would have been like.

p.s. Go to the forums at officer.com, you can find out just about anything you could ever want to know about getting hired and chat w/ folks in you area doing the same thing.

You can't do anything until you start! Take the test and see how that goes. It may give you some help in making a decision then take it one step at a time until you get hired.

Hey if the whole law enforcement thing doesn't work out, "i like a challenge, i like going to work and not knowing what ive got ahead of me, i like problem solving" This description fits TEACHING to a TEE! Pay isn't quite as good.. but heck you get the whole summer off!!

Good luck man.. since meeting you at the bash I feel you are a great guy and will excel in whatever you try to do!

(I think I wrote the same thing in one of my student's yearbooks this year!)

Go for it. A lot of people just go to work everyday for the paycheck, you need to do something in life that challenges you and makes you want to get up ever morning. I think you would make one hell of a cop. Law enforcement is one career that will keep you challenged, each day will bring a different situation and it keeps you on your toes. It can have it's really boring days too. Good Luck!!!

Best of luck to you!!! I tried to go the military then law enforcement route, was turned away by both because of an injury during my senior year of high school. I still to this day wonder how things would be different. If that is what you truely want to do, then by all means, pursue it!!
