You should look at the new Honda NC700X. It is a parallel twin that is supposed to get 70 to 75mpg. It's not a bad looking bike and its $6999 without the ABS package.

while not a scooter we are looking at some similar math with the wife's truck  How far is your drive each way to work? I'd be worried that the slower acceleration from the scooter would cause you to be a traffic issue, thus affecting your safety.

I live in the sticks traffics not a big deal, 1 stop light in the whole town. 56 miles a day, gas is killing me

I had a 1986 Honda CH150D. It would easily out accelerate the average 4 cylinder car from 0-60. It would also run wide open at 70 mph all day long and get 80 mpg. Sold it two years ago and now with gas hitting $4.50 a gallon in my area, I'm REALLY having seller's remorse.

I had not seen that one, that could fit the bill.

cool deal, its been a loooong time since I rode anything scooter like but I just never really thought of them as quick accelerating. If I could find one that I could carry my carry on bag and backpack to JFK I'd do it  would have to look like a complete POS though, otherwise someone might try to borrow it for a long time :banghead:

I liked being able to park it anywhere, go into a store and not have to constantly worry about it. With an expensive motorcycle, it's practically a given that some idiot will push it over or back into it with his car. Murphy's Law.

In town it was a bit embarrassing as most people thought it was a liquor cycle but running down the highway at 70+ mph on 10" tires and passing cars was fun! Lots of thumbs up and :wtf: looks.

Liquid cooled 4 stroke with electric fan, floor heater vents, digital speedometer with analog temperature, fuel and voltage gauges.....and of course the motorized pop up headlight! Only had about 13,000 miles and they're typically good for over 50,000. Held a bit over 2 gallons of gas and would go about 160 miles between fill ups.

I guess if you dont drive on the interstate, that would be perfect. If you had to drive on the interstate a 150cc would be the better option?

Has to be at least 150cc to be freeway legal. I think in some states you can get a 125cc and not need a motorcycle endorsement which may be a selling point for the smaller displacement. Got to pick and choose your highways too. I wouldn't get on I65 in Indiana with anything less than 500cc. Average speed is 90 to 100 mph. I seriously don't think the cops even look at you unless you're topping triple digits.

Hmmm.. maybe in northern indiana, but I drive back/forth between Lafayette and indy and they nail people consistently doing 10+ over! Of course I bought the Busa to save on fuel as it does better than my mustang! No way would I drive a scooter on the interstate though

I drive the new generation Prius. If I try hard, I get 58mpg, better than any of my bikes.

I have an 18 mile commute all freeway from the end of my street to the center of town, and it gets windy here  I would need a super scooter, 600cc or up to really justify the purchase. Plus it gets cold here in the winter, lots of snow, so it would be a summer only machine like my busa and 14.
If I lived in a reasonable climate and just did in town riding a scooter would be a great option though. I still think I might pick up an SV650 or something similiarly comfy and good on gas, not sure I could go from hyper-bike power to scooter power in traffic, I'd feel like a sitting duck
