I'm kind of in the same mindset as you.
Five or six years ago, some friends of ours invited us to go to Hawaii with them and we said OK. My wife with enthusiasm, me not so much. I hate to travel. It's a necessary evil for getting to where you want to go. Bleah.
Anyhoo, after we landed in Kauai, we were walking through the airport from the terminal to the baggage claim area and we kept seeing all of these little old men and women, many using walkers and nearly all of them barely able to move, actually. As we overheard conversations of many of these older folks, it because clear that they were there for the first time in their lives.
The wiff and I both had the same thought at the same time and voiced it to each other: Let's not wait until we're too old to enjoy life to go out and enjoy life.
We don't necessarily live high on the hog right now but when we want to do most things, we're able to do them without too terribly much trouble. We mind our futures, though. We also don't want to be working at McDonald's or Wally World when we're old and decrepit.
We've done a lot of things in our past and have a great list of memories. We'll never regret any of them, even if we do become old and decrepit and broke.
As an aside, we were fortunate enough to sell our home 2 and a half years ago when the market was just starting to slide. We moved out of the area that is highly depressed now and into an area which, while not entirely unaffected, has not been hammered nearly as hard.
Pure good fortune. And that's the VERY VERY short list.
We're counting our lucky stars, to be sure.
