Cut-out & Fuel Filters

While riding on Sunday, I experienced the cut-out problem when accelerating hard starting around 8k rpm to around 9.5k rpm. It was a quick on/off which almost spit me from the bike.

So... what to do. Went into the shop today and replaced all fuel filters (3 on the fuel pump assy & the one inside the fuel tank). Most all were serverly clogged with gas "crap". The small metal screen was 98%, the paper 70%, the plastic 99%, tank was around 50%. I currently use Amoco gold (92), but sounds like I need to switch to a cleaner fuel if that's possible.

Bottom line is I suggest replacing *ALL* filters every 6 months (just about the time it has been since my last filter replacement). to keep thge mighty busa alive and well.

Since my filter replacement, the bike is her old self.....power out the *** . I'm happy again.

Could you post the part numbers so we can start ordering them to keep in stock so whenever the problems occur we won't have to wait on back order parts.

Fuel Tank -
Fuel c.o.c.k asy.....44300-24F01
o-ring...............44351-33E00

Pump Assy -

fuel strainer.......15410-24F00
insulator...........15130-24F00
o-ring..............15146-24F00
o-ring..............15157-24F00
screen/strainer.....15165-24F00

I would replace all filters and the o-rings at the same time, everytime.

Thanks, buddy! I will order a fair share of each one. How many miles are on your bike and is this the first time you changed them?

Jeff and Chuck that is a very cool idea to have the parts available as a kit. Maybe it is time to research out a good EFI fuel filter which would be inline between the tank and the pump. Regular mantainance of a EFI automobile requires routine fuel filter replacemant.

Perhaps a look into BMW service intervals and procedures would be worth while as their K models have been Fuel Injected for some time.

I am curious to see if the 2000 models are suffering from the cutout as the new 00 tanks are plumbed a little differant, I may have some light to shed on this thursday as I have some special tanks on order and the gentleman assisting me was on the phone with Japan going over the 99/00 differances in regards to the fuel pump and tanks.

Why are no other bikes plagued with this BS, 98-99 GSXR750, BMW K1000's, I am just not so ready to buy the fuel additive story, never did!

Jeff are you on the regular diet of any injection cleaner for your Busa. Some speak of the Redline product as helping.

I purchased a Suzuki fuel pressure gauge just to monitor any changes in pressure.

I want to know what the brown gook is, an "inner tank coating"?

maybe your just lucky vegas dude . if i were you id swing by a casino while ya still got it !!!!
i was there last week . though about lookin ya up. just no time...

my pump is removed and apart as we speak but i was afraidto pull on that plastic insert in the pump housing too hard so i blew through it with an air hose into a glass jar . no debree came out at all . tank petcock screen was perfectly clean too . yet my bike is running so lean its scary . i thought my pc2 was bad and unhooked it .
id like to remove that plastic insert . do i just pull like hell on it or what ? i was afraid to be too rough with it .

Hi there.
In the Sport Rider/February 2000 Magazine
there's an article about
"GOT A SICK HAYABUSA" on page 21.
They informs us that SUZUKI has sent out
an technical bulletin to all dealers, informing them about the filter clog-up problem with some of the oxygenated pump fules on the (US?) market. As an result of this the EFI will not have enough fuel.

As far as i understand this could actually
cause serious engine problem, melted pistons
etc. If this had happend to my two stroke Kawasaki 750 bike, the piston would had been destroyed in 1/8 mile.

========================================
Anyway --- Suzuki has an new replacement filter distrubted, and dealers should
replace the filters under "WARRANTY"!
========================================

Why does this happends ?
Could it be caused by water in the gasoline pump ? (yes they have water in the station gasoline tanks and if the personell does'nt
check and lower the water level you can fill your bike with some water together with gasoline.

There was a problem here in Sweden, when the lead was banned and replaced with "something" else.
This replacement took-up the water from the
tank and also did'nt blend with the 2-stroke oil, they become separated after awile.
Alot of snowmobiles were destroyed by this. We 2-stroke owners always fill up our bikes with un-leaded gasoline.

And how-bout the Gasoline that goes into the
station tanks, is it possible that they make misstakes and put lead-"substituted"-fuel in the wrong tank .... If you fill in 100 gallon in an 20000 gallon tank, that will surley cause problems.
Here in sweden they have put in 93-octan in
98-octan tank, just to empty the truck ...

Having problem at one station ?
don't go there next time.

/Best regards from Ove in Sweden.

Jeff, as usual you have the intelligent answer and apparently the knowledge to remove, dismantle and replace all parts. However, some of us are not so gifted.
If the "Busa" was not new, and or, if all other efi motorcycles had the problem, you can bet the manufacturer would come up with a remedy, short of every 7,000 miles replace all filters.
Perhaps the most compeling is your statement ... a quick on/off, almost spit me off the bike ...

Though I don't ride as hard as many of you the same thing has happened to me, at the other end of the rpm scale ...

was leaving a parking lot driveway, this time, the "quick" on/off" was a low speed stall ... almost dumped me and the wife into oncoming traffic.

My "ususal" ride is through hilly, steep, canyons, generally between 1,800-4,000 rpm's
... the "quick on/off" or stutter, stumble, near stall ... on a 32 mile ride had 18 of those!

got home and added fuel injector cleaner ...

first ride had 3 "on/off's" ... next day only 1, third day none???

this first started at about 6,800 miles and was just about eliminated with the additive. However, this "cure" lasted only 4 tank fulls, by the 5th I had to add the additive again. the last, or 2nd episode was the most severe ... dangerous to the rider ...

hope Suzuki comes up with a solution before some one is hurt!

Spray some 6-1 on it and then pull hard. It has an o-ring at the bottom that has expansed with time (making it hard to get out).

Seems that I remember the tech bullitin has a single part number for the kit now. I'll stop by the shop today and pick it up.

I have not used any f/i cleaner since my race fuel problem last year (Nutec gave me a 7hp gain, but you must drain the tank and clean the fuel system after each use......like a race weekend).

Jeff... I assume the part numbers above are for '99's. Can anyone tell me if the '00 pn's are the same. If no what are they ??

When my cut-out problem was being investigated they replaced all the filters and fuel lines then. But at about 20,000km on the bike the filters were still clean. No blockages and no brown gunk. I only used a fuel additive as a cleaner after this change when I still had the cut-out.

I had to pull on mine pretty hard. I stopped at first, went back to the computer, read some more then went out and pulled it out.

If you really have to do all that filter stuff every six months there is a design flaw somewhere. A Shovelhead doesn't need that much TLC.

I was looking under the tank yesterday and was thinking about removing all the stock fuel filters and then installing quallity inline fuel filters, preferbly the clear type, one on the supply line and one on the return line. This should take care of filtering all the fuel and allow you to check the filter visually for any FOD, foreing object damage.
Any thoughts or comments on this ????

Ride Safe, Bob

Bob I know of a member who has installed a fuel filter inline after the petcock he is usung this to great success so far(he installed in august 99). We spoke the other night and he was still very happy with this setup.

I will send you his email to your mailbox when I get his permission.
